    Open Access•Marek Jeziński•ARTICLE•Perspektywy Kultury•2025

W niniejszej części nowego numeru „Perspektyw Kultury” chcemy przybliżyć Czytelnikom kilka istotnych aspektów związanych z kulturą popularną na przykładzie sztuki komiksowej. Uznajemy, że komiks jest wytworem kultury popularnej, a jako taki odbija istotne tendencje panujące w kulturze danego społeczeństwa, dając jednocześnie twórcom przestrzeń do pokazania własnej oryginalnej wizji rzeczywistości. To jednocześnie sfera wyobraźni autorów, dla któr…

  • Usłyszeć Tytusa

    Open Access•Marek Jeziński•ARTICLE•Perspektywy Kultury•2025

W komiksa…

  • O rezyliencyjnej sile muzyki uwag kilka

    Open Access•Marek Jeziński•ARTICLE•Roczniki Humanistyczne•2024

  • Institutionalization of Hate Speech as a Daily Media Practice

    Marek Jeziński•ARTICLE•Journalism Practice•2023•References: 14

In the article, I discuss how hate speech becomes institutionalized in the media discourse thanks to the news media and how it is included in the media practice by public television in Poland. Hate speech is based on expressive, conflict-prone, and black-and-white schemes, employing language characterized by emotions, negative stigmatization, and simplifications. As a case study, I analyze the "Wiadomości" ("News") daily program on Polish public …

  • Based on Anglo-American sources

    Open Access•Marek Jeziński•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2022

In the paper, I discuss the use of Western sources by music journalists in Poland in the 1980s and its cultural consequences with regard to the journalists’ milieu, the media patterns, and the readers/listeners. The phenomenon is analyzed by exploring the music journal “Magazyn Muzyczny” (“Music Magazine”) in the 1983–1988 period as a case study. In the 1980s decade, it was the most important and influential Polish monthly devoted entirely to pop…

  • On the Benefits of Plague

    Edyta Lorek-Jezińska, Edyta Lorek‐jezińska et al.•ARTICLE•Theatre Journal•2022

The aim of this essay is to demonstrate the significant function played by theatres during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. It examines three pandemic projects created by fringe theatre companies and individual performers in Poland that address political and social questions, such as women's reproductive rights, excessive government control over private lives, and the social exclusion of disabled and immigrant communities: Art…

  • Introduction to the Special Issue–The Residents

Marek Jeziński, Thomas Grochowski•ARTICLE•Rock Music Studies•2021

The Residents are one of the most important bands in avant-garde/alternative music. With their first albums in the 1970s, they quickly established themselves as fierce critics of popular culture an

  • Pop, Pandemic, Politics

Martin Butler, Marek Jeziński•ARTICLE•Rock Music Studies•2021

In a dialogic form incorporating perspectives from Germany and Poland, the essay maps the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic on the production, distribution, and reception of popular music, arguing that the virtual realm of social media and sharing platforms allows for alternative ways of engaging with pop. Yet, while this “virtual social” may help overcome social disintegration and foster shared identities through times of crisis, the withdrawal t…

  • In Search of Deconstruction

    Marek Jeziński•ARTICLE•Rock Music Studies•2021

In this article, I discuss deconstruction and cultural resistance to commercial culture as a strategy practiced by the Residents in the 1974–1980period. The band questioned the mechanisms governing popular culture by a critique of novelty cults, rock-idol worship, simplicity of chart hits, and the art-promotion strategies following practices of commercial advertising. Their LPs deconstructed, reversed, mocked, and distorted the music industry as …

  • The response of Polish performance artists to cultural policies during the pandemic

Marek Jeziński, Edyta Lorek-Jezińska et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2021•References: 8

This article examines performance and theater artists’ reactions to and attitudes toward the decisive measures taken by the government to curb the spread of the coronavirus in Poland. It traces the transformation of these attitudes over the different stages of the pandemic, from the initial complete lockdown (spring 2020) to the temporary relaxation of the restrictions and up to the second lockdown (fall 2020). Our research is based on a series o…

  • The Perimeter Walk

    Marek Jeziński•ARTICLE•Rock Music Studies•2018

This article discusses the Polish psychedelic music movement of the 1960s and 1970s as a phenomenon located on the perimeter of the Western music culture. Musically, Polish psychedelic bands came mainly from the hippie milieu; they drew on the psychedelic styles developed in the West, but saturated with local specifics both in the music and lyrics. Moreover, as the psychedelic style gained popularity, it also influenced many performers active in …
