When the Dutch ship Batavia wrecked in 1629 on Morning Reef in the Houtman Abrolhos Islands off the coast of Western Australia, most of the passengers and crew survived the wreck, but about 200 of the survivors later perished on and around Beacon Island where they had landed after the wreck. As many as 81 bodies may be buried on Beacon Island and 21 bodies have been excavated to date. During the 2017–2018 excavations, seven of the buried individu…

Fancy Dress as an Amateur Craft
Starting from the author’s own vexed relationship with fancy dress, this article explores the practice and social-cultural meaning of fancy dress in both historical and contemporary contexts. Fancy dress is positioned as an amateur craft that challenges the idea of amateur practice as necessarily self-expressive and its practitioners as repositories of affect. Academics in the fields of fashion history, design history and performance studies alik…
The Four Faces of Alexander Hamilton: Jefferson’s Hamilton, Hollywood’s Hamilton, Miranda’s Hamilton, and the Real Hamilton
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway blockbuster Hamilton: An American Musical kept Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill and has transformed this unlikely founding father into a Broadway celebrity. But while Hamilton is currently seen as a heroic figure, throughout much of the nation’s history he was seen as “un-American”—a closet monarchist who allegedly hated the people, the “great beast.” Many progressive historians and biographers repeated distorted a…

What Might Have Been
The fiftieth anniversary of President John F. I have developed three characterizations of the prosumer dependent on how the tools, materials, and advice provided by companies who incite consumer creativity are used: the prosumer who follows the rules; those who reject …

Secret and Sanctioned: Covert Operations and the American Presidency
This groundbreaking new book challenges the notion that covert operations are a twentieth-century phenomenon, recounting a wide array of operations sanctioned by America's Founding Fathers.
