Using human-centered design to re-vision the emergency obstetric and newborn care framework
The Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) Framework has been instrumental in helping countries plan and monitor maternal health services for over 20 years. Given evolving health systems, the changing expectations of both patients and health providers, and the expanded evidence base, the “Re-Visioning EmONC” project was initiated to update this framework to better meet countries’ needs. To understand the needs of its primary intended users,…
The development of proxy indicators to measure workforce well-being in emergency obstetric and neonatal care settings
Background: A shortage of health workers with skills to deliver high-quality routine and emergency maternal and newborn health (MNH) care hinders achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Health worker well-being is a determinant of the quality and experiences of care. The emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) framework supports country-level planners and managers to evaluate EmONC systems. We describe a measure development activit…
Parent-child communication on sexual and reproductive health
Effective communication between parents and their children is necessary, yet it currently remains a challenge for many parents in the studied sites. Our findings complement the literature on adolescent SRH in West Africa, which shows that the parent-child relationship is of paramount importance. The study results informed the design and implementation of an intervention focused on training parents to improve their knowledge, skills and confidence…
Clients’ perceptions of the quality of post-abortion care in eight health facilities in Dakar, Senegal
Post-abortion care (PAC) integrates elements that are vital for women’s survival after abortion complications and their ability to meet their subsequent fertility intentions. Currently, the utilization of PAC among women in need remains too low, particularly in settings where unsafe abortion is an appreciable cause of maternal mortality. Interventions have aimed at addressing unmet need; however, these still require information on the extent to w…
Understanding the financial burden of incomplete abortion
Timely access to treatment is essential for women when they experience abortion complications. Out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditure is a known barrier to health care access. In 2018, we assessed the financial burden of accessing postabortion care (PAC) borne by women in Dakar, Senegal, where studies estimate that half of poor women with complications obtain PAC. We interviewed 729 women following discharge from PAC. Women reported expenditures on tran…
Health-related media use among youth audiences in Senegal
Lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are experiencing rapid changes in access to and use of new internet and digital media technologies. The purpose of this study was to better understand how younger audiences are navigating traditional and newer forms of media technologies, with particular emphasis on the skills and competencies needed to obtain, evaluate and apply health-related information, also defined as health and media literacy. Sixt…
Task shifting for emergency obstetric surgery in district hospitals in Senegal
Due to a long-term shortage of obstetricians, the Ministry of Health of Senegal and Dakar University Obstetric Department agreed in 1998 to train district teams consisting of an anaesthetist, general practitioner and surgical assistant in emergency obstetric surgery. An evaluation of the policy was carried out in three districts in 2006, covering trends in rates of major obstetric interventions, outcomes in newborns and mothers, and the views of …
Ruling Out Pregnancy Among Family Planning Clients
Women in many countries are often denied vital family planning services if they are not menstruating when they present at clinics, for fear that they might be pregnant. A simple checklist based on criteria approved by the World Health Organization has been developed to help providers rule out pregnancy among such clients, but its use is not yet widespread. Researchers in Guatemala, Mali, and Senegal conducted operations research to determine whet…
