Correlates of reproductive coercion among women of reproductive age in Kingston, Jamaica and Hanoi, Vietnam
We sought to identify the correlates of reproductive coercion (RC) among women in Kingston, Jamaica and Hanoi, Vietnam. We completed a secondary analysis of two cross-sectional datasets in September 2022: 1) a study of 222 women, 18–25 years of age, attending a clinic in Kingston, Jamaica in 2018–2019 and 2) a study of 500 women, 18–45 years of age, receiving care at a hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2017–2018. Shared eligibility criteria between t…
“I felt like I was a bad person… which I’m not”
Stigma is present throughout everyday interactions but has particular salience for people seeking abortion care. Using Goffman’s conceptualization of stigma as a marker and enforcer of social ostracization, we expand on existing understandings of abortion stigma and its management. We draw on interviews with 12 clients and 10 staff members of crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in Ohio to demonstrate how stigmatization around abortion begins before a…
Housing Stability and Access to General Healthcare and Reproductive Healthcare Among Women in Ohio
Delivery at Catholic hospitals and postpartum contraception use, five US states, 2015–2018
We found lower use of postpartum female sterilization, but no difference in highly effective contraception overall, for people who delivered at a Catholic hospital compared to a non-Catholic hospital
Role of temporal discounting in a conditional cash transfer (CCT) intervention to improve engagement in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) cascade
Clinicaltrials.gov number NCT01838005 , April 23, 2013
Prevalence and attitudes on female genital mutilation/cutting in Egypt since criminalisation in 2008
Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), which can result in severe pain, haemorrhage and poor birth outcomes, remains a major public health issue. The extent to which prevalence of and attitudes toward the practice have changed in Egypt since its criminalisation in 2008 is unknown. We analysed data from the 2005, 2008 and 2014 Egypt Demographic and Health Surveys to assess trends related to FGM/C. Specifically, we determined whether FGM/C prev…

Sexual Relationship Power and Semen Exposure Among Female Patients at a Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinic in Kingston, Jamaica
Women's power in sexual relationships is thought to be an important predictor of condom use. However, research on correlates of condom use often relies on participant reporting of behavior, which has questionable validity. We evaluated the association between scores from the modified Sexual Relationship Power Scale (SRPS-M) and biological detection of semen exposure in a prospective study of adult women attending a sexually transmitted infection …

An Assessment of Abortion Services in Public Health Facilities in Mozambique
Complications of unsafe abortion contribute to high maternal mortality and morbidity in Mozambique. In 2002, the Ministry of Health conducted an assessment of abortion services in the public health sector to inform efforts to make abortion safer. This paper reports on interviews with 461 women receiving treatment for abortion-related complications in 37 public hospitals and four health centres in the ten provinces of Mozambique. One head of both …
