  • “It makes you feel like they’ve actually put effort into it.” Students’ perceptions of screen-capture video feedback on assignments on a social science course

Open Access•Sam Pryke, Michael Rees et al.•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2023

This article is the first to examine the use of screen-capture video feedback on student assignments on a social science degree at a British university. It is based on qualitative, focus group, research with students who received one or more video recordings on their academic work over the period 2019–2021. The article first places video feedback in the wider context of research on the subject. Our literature review suggests that whilst video doe…

  • The use of Socrative in university social science teaching

    Open Access•Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•Learning and Teaching•2020

Socrative is an online platform that allows a teacher to put questions to students through an app on their smart phone or tablet. In existence since 2011, its use is now quite common in university teaching. But is Socrative any good? This article reviews the literature on the device and discusses my research on the use of the app, the first carried out with social science students. The secondary research findings are that students find Socrative …

  • National and European identity

    Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•National Identities•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 13

This article is one in a number of attempts by students of nations and nationalism to understand national and European identity. Its point of departure are the arguments of Guibernau (2011) that the EU has created only a non-emotional identity based on the pursuit of prosperity; and, conversely, the claim of Wellings and Power (2015) that the EU has now its own nationalism with an emotional dimension. My initial observation is that an explicit ev…

  • European nations, explaining their formation

    Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•National Identities•2018•Cited by: 1

  • The control of sexuality in the early British Boy Scouts movement

    Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2005

This article looks at the way in which the early (1907–1922) British Boy Scouts movement attempted to control sexuality through archival examination of the organization's preoccupation with preventing masturbation or, as it was generally referred to, ‘self abuse’. Having briefly outlined the origination and nature of the Scouts, it considers why Baden‐Powell and others thought masturbation to be such a dangerous practice and how they proposed to …

  • Some of Our People can be the Most Difficult'. Reflections on Difficult Interviews

    Open Access•Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This article questions the methodological convention in the social sciences that the interviewer must never disagree with a respondent in qualitative research. The issue arose during research on the British Serbian community when some participants sought to justify, exculpate or reject Serbian liability for atrocity. My initial response not to demur but to simply move onto the next question morally tainted the research, as it seemed to collud in …

  • British Serbs and long distance nationalism

    Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2003•Cited by: 10•References: 7

This article explores long distance nationalism within the British Serbian community. Specifically, it focuses on the experience and identity of the children of the nationalist Serbs who fled Tito's Yugoslavia in 1945 and settled in Britain. The British Serbian community is a small one and the article does not make any great claims about its transnational political impact. But it does argue that the high level of national consciousness is best un…

  • Comment on Frank Bechhofer, David McCrone, Richard Kiely and Robert Stewart, ‘Constructing National Identity

    Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•Sociology•2001

As Bechhofer, McCrone, Kiely and Stewart point out, there has been a tendency in the study of nationalism in particular, and in the social sciences in general, to assume that national identity is simply conferred upon individuals by the nation-state. Their article ‘Constructing National Identity: Arts and Landed Elites in Scotland’ seeks to rectify this emphasis (Bechhofer et al. 1999). Through theoretical argument and discussion of survey work i…

  • The Boy Scouts and the `Girl Question

    Open Access•Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2001•References: 2

This article examines the attitude of the early Boy Scouts movement to sexual relationships between boys and girls. The Scouts were founded by Baden-Powell in 1907 to try and reverse the perceived physical and moral deterioration of British youth. Though he was not involved with the subsequent `girl problem', the episode was in keeping with his attempt to instil order and respectability in British youth, especially the working class. Going furthe…

  • Nationalism and Sexuality, What are the Issues

    Open Access•Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•1998•Cited by: 20•References: 5

This article attempts to clarify in a systematic fashion the relationship between nationalism and sexuality. Whilst a relationship is now generally recognised between the two phenomena, it has been neglected relative to other issues. There are genuine reasons for this, the relationship being fraught with conceptual and empirical problems. Such problems are evident in the writings to date directly on nationalism and sexuality. This discussion atte…

  • Nationalism as Culturalism

    Open Access•Sam Pryke•ARTICLE•Politics•1995•Cited by: 3•References: 6

The essay assesses the currently fashionable notion that nationalism is cultural phenomenon through examination of the ‘Godfather’ of cultural nationalism, Johan Herder. It finds that nations only really arise with political nationalist movements and the building of nation-states in the 19th century
