  • Quality at the centre of universal health coverage

    Open Access•Howard L Sobel, Howard Sobel et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The last decade of the MDG era witnessed substantial focus on reaching the bottom economic quintiles in low and middle income countries. However, the inordinate focus on reducing financial risk burden and increasing coverage without sufficient focus on expanding quality of services may account for slow progress of the MDGs in many countries. Human Resources for Health underlie quality and service delivery improvements, yet remains under-addressed…

Open Access•Sangeeta Mookherji, Samantha Ski et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2015

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria (GF) strives for high value for money, encouraging countries to integrate synergistic services and systems strengthening to maximize investments. The GF needs to show how, and how much, its grants support more than just HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria. Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) has been part of HIV/AIDS grants since 2007. Previous studies showed the GF PBF system does…

  • Answering the question

    Open Access•Dale Huntington•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Performance-based payment schemes are nothing new for not-for-profit organizations that use commercial business models, such as social marketing and social franchise programs. Perhaps because of their familiarity with using output-based budgeting processes, these programs have advanced the development of different types of modeling techniques for describing impacts on health outcomes, and applied these estimates to monitor programs worldwide. Tri…

  • From Millennium Development Goals to post-2015 sustainable development

    P Hill, Peter S Hill et al.•ARTICLE•Reproductive Health Matters•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Using research from country case studies, this paper offers insights into the range of institutional and structural changes in development assistance between 2005 and 2011, and their impact on the inclusion of a sexual and reproductive health and rights agenda in national planning environments. At a global level during this period, donors supported more integrative modalities of aid - sector wide approaches, poverty reduction strategy papers, dir…

  • Women's perceptions of abortion in Egypt

Dale Huntington, Laila Nawar et al.•ARTICLE•Reproductive Health Matters•1997•Cited by: 3•References: 3

A rapidly implemented qualitative study was conducted to investigate the perceptions of women about abortion in Egypt using in-depth interviews with hospitalised patients and focus group discussions with family planning clients and non-contracepting women. The most salient issue confronting the patients (whether the abortion had been spontaneous or induced) was their physical survival. The necessity to return immediately to their daily routines w…

  • The Reliability of the Situation Analysis Observation Guide

Dale Huntington, Katherine Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1996•Cited by: 2

The use of direct observation to assess the quality of family planning services is a central element of situation analysis studies. The interrater reliability of observational data from a study in Turkey was assessed using teams of multiple observers. Overall, the findings suggest a strong degree of reliability. Observers were more likely to agree when rating physical actions than verbal cues and when both observers were of similar backgrounds. T…

This report analyzes the results of an operations research project carried out at two sites in Egypt to improve the medical care and counseling of postabortion patients. Preintervention and postintervention surveys and observations were conducted. After the introduction of vacuum aspiration under local anesthesia, the number of cases treated with dilatation and curettage under general anesthesia dropped from an average of 169 per month to 16. The…

  • The Integration of Family Planning and Childhood Immunization Services in Togo

Dale Huntington, Aristide Aplogan•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1994•Cited by: 6

Improvements in the constellation of services in the African context are largely addressed through attaining better measures of service integration, which can be achieved through improved referral across categories of health programs. The use of an unobtrusive referral message that linked family planning and the Expanded Program of Immunizations (EPI) services was tested in an operations research study in Togo. The introduction of the referral me…

  • A New Approach to Eliciting Information about Induced Abortion

Dale Huntington, Barbara S Mensch et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1993•Cited by: 11

Reliable quantitative data on abortion are sorely needed, particularly in developing countries. Past experience in large-scale survey research has demonstrated that direct questioning on this subject results in significant underreporting. This article presents results of an experiment to collect data on induced abortion in Côte d'Ivoire within the context of a family planning operations research study. First, questions were employed to broach the…

This study evaluates the effect of a nurse training program in family planning counseling skills on the quality of service delivery at the clinic level, as well as its impact on client compliance with prearranged appointments. The study used a quasi-experimental design to compare certified nurses who received six weeks of family planning technical training with certified nurses who, in addition to the technical training course, received a three-d…

  • User's Perspective of Counseling Training in Ghana

Dale Huntington, Cheryl Lettenmaier et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1990•Cited by: 6

Evaluating counseling training programs from the client's perspective has posed a methodological challenge for family planning researchers. This report describes an evaluation method that combines clinic observation with an exit interview methodology. Eighteen women posing as clients were requested to visit three clinics with trained and three clinics with untrained family planning counselors. These clients (called "mystery clients" in Ghana) wer…

  • Mass Media Family Planning Promotion in Three Nigerian Cities

Phyllis T Piotrow, Jose G Rimon et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1990•Cited by: 7

Television promotion of family planning and clinic sites in three cities of Nigeria--Ilorin, Ibadan, and Enugu--played a significant role in 1985-88 in increasing the number of new acceptors at family planning clinics in each city. Family planning skits, prepared with advice and support from the local service providers, were included in existing popular entertainment shows. Questions asked in a recall survey among the exposed population in Enugu …
