  • A Hybrid Evaluation Approach

Open Access•Kathryn Dinh, Heather Worth et al.•ARTICLE•Evaluation Journal of Australasia•2025•References: 6

Culturally responsive evaluation contests the presumed universality of Western-derived evaluation methods and emphasises the importance of adapting evaluation methods to be context-sensitive. It prioritises respect for the values of the communities participating in an evaluation and mutual empowerment. While there are evaluation methods and approaches that reflect Indigenous ways of knowing and experience, and frameworks for identifying the cultu…

  • Historic and Contemporary Influences on HIV Advocacy in Vietnam

Open Access•Kathryn Dinh, Khuat Thu Hong et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

HIV civil society advocacy in Vietnam is shaped by a unique fusion of historic and contemporary influences, resulting in nuanced ways in which advocacy is practised. In this study, we interviewed representatives from civil society, the Government of Vietnam, international NGOs, multilateral and research organisations and commercial consultancies to identify the influences on advocacy practice today. Aspects of Confucianism, Buddhism, Communism an…

  • Confucian Evaluation

Open Access•Kathryn Dinh, Heather Worth et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Culturally responsive evaluation contests that Western-derived evaluation methods represent a universal truth and promotes approaches that reflect the local context. Taking this approach, we examine how the method of contribution analysis may be modified to reflect a different worldview. We reframe contribution analysis using a Confucian lens as Confucianism represents a value system that is still integral to the way societies operate in several …

  • Women and development in Vietnam

    Open Access•Khuat Thu Hong•ARTICLE•Regions & Cohesion•2016•Cited by: 1

Background: In many ways, Vietnam can be considered a representative case in global development debates. It has been presented as a relative success story in many global development discussions since the country has moved into the middle-income category. Moreover, it statistically met many of the indicators included in the Millennium Development Goals, especially the reduction of poverty and, above all, extreme poverty

  • Obstacles to the ‘cleanliness of our race’

Open Access•Harriet M Phinney, Khuat Thu Hong et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2013

This paper focuses on the interactions between medical professionals in Hanoi, Vietnam and their HIV-positive patients who desire children. Drawing on ethnographic research, we argue that despite ongoing state and civil society efforts to reduce discrimination against people living with HIV (PLHIV), doctors do stigmatize patients who choose to reproduce, even if the patients are found to have carefully considered all associated risks. While the e…

Danièle Bélanger, Khuat Thu Hong et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Vietnamese Studies•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 5

This paper examines the social construction of marriage migration in Vietnamese online media. We present a content analysis of 643 items published online between 2000 and 2010 on international marriages between Vietnamese women and foreign Asian men. Our analysis reveals that online media content speaks to four important shifts discussed in Vietnamese studies: (1) shifts in notions of gender, sexuality, and marriage; (2) emerging discourses aroun…

  • I Am Tired But If I Don't Try to Have Sex, My Wife Will Think I've Been Fooling around in the City”

Huong Ngoc Nguyen, Melissa Hardesty et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Mostly operating from a risk and risk-reduction paradigm, existing research on migrants in Vietnam tends to conceptualize sex and risky sexual behaviors as isolated life domains. This study begins to develop a contextually rich understanding of migrants' sex lives by examining the relationships among sex, work, and the constant pendulum-like migrating movements of 23 Vietnamese married migrants in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Using data from in-de…

  • In full swing? How do pendulum migrant labourers in Vietnam adjust their sexual perspectives to their rural-urban lives

Huong Ngoc Nguyen, Melissa Hardesty et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2011

Having emerged only recently due to fast urbanisation and globalisation, pendulum migrant labourers in Vietnam are economically, culturally and socially difficult to locate - though they are estimated to number in their millions. Defined by their frequent migration between village and city, pendulum migrant labourers occupy an extended period of liminality. Are they traditional villagers or liberal city people when it comes to sex? Does city life…

  • From Foreign Trainees to Unauthorized Workers

Open Access•Danièle Bélanger, Kayoko Ueno et al.•ARTICLE•Asian and Pacific migration journal•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 11

This paper documents the experiences of Vietnamese migrant workers who migrated to Japan as industrial “trainees” during early and mid-2000, some of whom became unauthorized workers. Based on in-depth interviews and survey data collected in Vietnam in 2008 and 2009 from migrants who had returned from Japan, this paper explores the factors that led some workers to slip from legal to irregular work. Our analysis shows how the recruitment process in…
