Theorizing the complexity of HIV disclosure in vulnerable populations
This theoretical model can be used in understanding processes of HIV disclosure in a community where HIV is concentrated in vulnerable populations and is highly stigmatized, and in determining how public health approaches would lead to reduced stigma levels and increased HIV disclosure rates
Factors Influencing the Risk of Becoming Sexually Active Among HIV Infected Adolescents in Kampala and Kisumu, East Africa
Mothers' willingness to pay for daughters' HPV vaccine in northern Vietnam
HPV vaccine is effective in preventing human papillomavirus, the main cause of cervical cancer. In Vietnam, at first, it was subsidized at $5 a dose and reached the coverage of 96% in two pilot provinces, indicating potentially high acceptance. Currently, it is provided at $120-195 for three doses. This is a cross-sectional study, conducted in two northern rural districts of Vietnam. Researchers present findings to show 53.1% of mothers stated th…
Translating primary into ‘positive’ prevention for adolescents in Eastern Africa
There is an urgent need to develop positive prevention interventions for adolescents living with HIV in high endemic regions. Adapting existing evidence-based interventions for resource-constrained settings is effective when the intervention's theoretical core elements are preserved while achieving cultural relevance. We describe the process of adapting a primary prevention to a secondary/positive prevention programme for adolescents living with …
Factors influencing social self-disclosure among adolescents living with HIV in Eastern Africa
Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) face many psychosocial challenges, including HIV disclosure to others. Given the importance of socialization during the adolescent transition process, this study investigated the psychological and social factors influencing self-disclosure of own HIV status to peers. We examined social HIV self-disclosure to peers, and its relationship to perceived HIV-related stigma, self-efficacy to disclose, self-esteem, and…
The interface between the national tuberculosis control programme and district hospitals in Cameroon
Tuberculosis remains a major public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. District hospitals (DHs) play a central role in district-based health systems, and their relation with vertical programmes is very important. Studies on the impact of vertical programmes on DHs are rare. This study aims to fill this gap. Its purpose is to analyse the interaction between the National Tuberculosis Control Programme (NTCP) and DHs in Cameroon, especially its e…
Having sex, becoming somebody
A growing number of adolescents are living with HIV/AIDS. For their well-being and for prevention, age- and culturally appropriate interventions become increasingly important. This qualitative study was conducted as the first step to develop a sexual and reproductive health (SRH) intervention. The study's objective was to assess the impact of HIV and related contextual conditions on identity formation of adolescents living with HIV/AIDS (ALH) in …
Operational assessment of access to ART in rural Africa
Despite the availability of large funds and considerable efforts to improve access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), coverage of treatment with ART remains low in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). We identified the bottlenecks for adults' access to ART in a semi-rural health zone in DRC, compared ART coverage in the urban and rural area and described the outcomes and yield of different HIV testing settings. An operational model was used to e…
Delivery of Male Circumcision Services
Three randomised clinical trials on the effects of male circumcision on HIV acquisition in men have been stopped by their data safety and management boards as the interim analyses showed a large protective effect in the range of 50 to 60%. It is not only this large effect that makes male circumcision very appealing as an intervention for HIV prevention. Male circumcision is a one-time intervention and unlike other prevention tools such as use of …
Voluntary counseling and HIV testing for pregnant women in the Kassena-Nankana district of northern Ghana
This study reports the results of a cross-sectional questionnaire survey undertaken in the Kassena-Nankana district of Ghana to assess the perception and attitude of 270 antenatal clinic attendants towards voluntary counseling and HIV testing. It was found that although 92.6% (95% CI 88.8-95.4) of respondents indicated a willingness to get tested, only 51% (95% CI 45.0-57.2) considered HIV testing for pregnant women to be useful. Most (93.6%) ind…
Why do young women have a much higher prevalence of HIV than young men? A study in Kisumu, Kenya and Ndola, Zambia
OBJECTIVE: To examine the factors responsible for the disparity in HIV prevalence between young men and women in two urban populations in Africa with high HIV prevalence. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey, aiming to include 1000 men and 1000 women aged 15-49 years in Kisumu, Kenya and Ndola, Zambia. METHODS: Participants were interviewed and tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Analyses compared the marital and non-marital partn…

Sexually transmitted diseases
Chlamydiae represent a unique group of gram-negative organisms sharing a characteristic intracellular lifestyle. In common with other gram-negative bacteria their surface components, i.e. outer membrane constituents, play a major role in their interaction with their surroundings. Surface antigens appear to modulate the critical events of attachment, uptake, infectivity, toxicity and the host immune responses that contribute to immunity and pathog…
Sudden infant death syndrome
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to investigate whether the winter increase in risk of sudden infant death was similar across social classes. DESIGN--This was an unmatched case-control study using routine data. SETTING--Cases and controls were selected from files holding routine birth and death certificate data for England and Wales for 1986. SUBJECTS--Cases were deaths in the first year of life occurring in the summer or the winter of 1986 with ment…
