Open Access•Jinan Usta, Dana Janbek et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2025

  • Liminality and transactional sex among queer refugees

    Open Access•Shirin Heidari, Ryan P Whitacre et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 11

People of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions who have been forcibly displaced (hereafter referred to as ‘queer refugees’) encounter liminal conditions along their displacement journeys that reinforce their marginalization. We conducted interviews with 46 queer refugees in four countries: Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, and Switzerland. We found that restrictive border controls, migration and refugee policies, asylum processe…

  • Phone-based monitoring to evaluate health policy and program implementation in Kenya

    Open Access•Paul G Ashigbie, Peter C Rockers et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2021

Monitoring and evaluating policies and programs in low- and middle-income countries are often difficult because of the lack of routine data. High mobile phone ownership in these countries presents an opportunity for efficient data collection through telephone interviews. This study examined the feasibility of collecting data on medicines through telephone interviews in Kenya. Data on the availability and prices of medicines at 137 health faciliti…

  • Love, power, resilience and vulnerability

Monica Adhiambo Onyango, Yaw Adu‐Sarkodie et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2019

Little is known about female sex workers' daily lives or emotional relationships. Using relational-cultural theory, this study explored the relationship dynamics between sex workers and their intimate partners in Kumasi, Ghana. We collected qualitative data from 37 male intimate partners through 24 in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions (FGDs) with 13 male partners. We also conducted three FGDs with 20 women involved in sex work. Rel…

  • Facilitators and barriers in implementing the Minimum Initial Services Package (Misp) for reproductive health in Nepal post-earthquake

Open Access•Anna Myers, Samira Sami et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2018

Ensuring RH is included in emergency preparedness and immediate response efforts and is continued through the transition to comprehensive care is critical for national governments and humanitarian response agencies. The MISP for RH remains a critical component of response efforts, and the humanitarian community should consider these learnings in future emergency response

  • A quantitative assessment of termination of sexual violence-related pregnancies in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Open Access•S Rouhani, Jennifer Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2016

Most women terminated SVRPs using medications or herbs not recognized as evidence-based methods of pregnancy termination and sought these methods outside of the formal healthcare sector. These data suggest that access to safe abortion methods is needed for women with SVRPs in DRC. Physical symptoms and emotional reactions related to the termination varied. While it is not possible to differentiate the impacts of sexual violence, SVRP, and pregnan…

  • Sexual violence-related pregnancies in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Open Access•Gillian Burkhardt, Jennifer Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2016

Women in this study had limited access to evidence-based safe abortion care and faced potential consequences from unsafe abortion, including increased morbidity and mortality. Increased access to reproductive health services, particularly safe, evidence-based abortion services, is paramount for women with SVRPs in eastern DRC and other conflict-affected regions

  • Reproductive health services for Syrian refugees in Zaatri Camp and Irbid City, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

Open Access•Sandra Krause, Holly Ann Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2015

MISP services and key elements to support implementation were largely in place. Pre-existing Jordanian health infrastructure, prior MISP trainings, dedicated leadership and available funding and supplies facilitated MISP implementation. The lack of a national protocol on clinical management of rape survivors hindered provision of these services, while communities' lack of information about the health benefits of the services as well as perceived …

  • Social Constructions of Masculinity and Male Survivors of Wartime Sexual Violence

Monica Adhiambo Onyango, K Hampanda•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2011

Male sexual violence has been reported in 25 armed conflicts in recent years. However, communities and organizations are not equipped to deal with male survivors of sexual violence because it undermines the ideals of social constructions of masculinity. Compared with females, male survivors lack access to reproductive health programs and are generally ignored in gender-based violence discourse. Yet, male survivors are known to suffer from numerou…
