  • Collective intelligence as collective information processing

Open Access•Zara Anwarzai, Cody Moser et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2026

Collective intelligence research spans multiple disciplines and focuses on a broad range of collective behaviors, including group problem-solving, flocking in social animals, and the formation of social knowledge. It is not apparent what these different forms of collective intelligence have in common, apart from being instances of collective behavior. In this paper, we develop a framework that enables us to better classify different forms of coll…

  • Howler Monkey Die‐Off in Southern Mexico

    Open Access•Gilberto Pozo‐Montuy, María del Socorro Aguilar‐Cucurachi et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2024

In May and June 2024, a die‐off of Mexican mantled howler monkeys ( Alouatta palliata mexicana ) occurred in southern Mexico. This commentary documents the event, attributing it to extreme heatwaves, drought, wildfires, and habitat impoverishment. Despite their reported resilience to habitat disturbances, mantled howler monkey mortality rate in some areas reached 31%. Key evidence points to heatstroke as the primary cause of death, exacerbated by…

  • The impact of the establishment of Otoch Ma’ax Yetel Kooh protected area (Yucatán, Mexico) on populations of two neotropical primates

    Open Access•Denise Spaan, Gabriel Ramos‐fernandez et al.•ARTICLE•PARKS•2021

In 2002, Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh (OMYK) was decreed a federal Flora and Fauna Protected Area in the state of Yucatn, Mexico, resulting in bans on hunting, logging and slash-and-burn agriculture within its limits. Our aim was to evaluate the influence of the establishment of the protected area on local primate populations. We compared relative abundances of Geoffroy's Spider Monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) and Black Howler Monkeys (Alouatta pigra) in ma…

  • Ecological and social determinants of association and proximity patterns in the fission–fusion society of spider monkeys ( Ateles geoffroyi )

    Open Access•Adriana R Aguilar‐Melo, Sophie Calmé et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2020

Some social species exhibit high levels of fission–fusion dynamics (FFD) that improve foraging efficiency. In this study, we shed light on the way that FFD allows animal groups to cope with fluctuations in fruit availability. We explore the relative contribution of fruit availability and social factors like sex in determining association and proximity patterns in spider monkeys. We tested the influence of fruit availability and social factors on …

  • Social network analysis in the study of nonhuman primates: A historical perspective

    Open Access•Lauren J N Brent, Julia Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2011

Advances over the last 15 years have made social network analysis (SNA) a powerful tool for the study of nonhuman primate social behavior. Although many SNA‐based techniques have been only very recently adopted in primatological research, others have been commonly used by primatologists for decades. The roots of SNA also stem from some of the same conceptual frameworks as the majority of nonhuman primate behavioral research. The rapid development…

  • No Evidence of Coordination Between Different Subgroups in the Fission–Fusion Society of Spider Monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi)

  • Intra‐community infanticide and forced copulation in spider monkeys: A multi‐site comparison between Cocha Cashu, Peru and Punta Laguna, Mexico

Open Access•K Nicole Gibson, Laura G Vick et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2008

We describe two cases of infanticide, two suspected infanticides, and a forced copulation by familiar resident males in two populations of wild spider monkeys ( Ateles belzebuth chamek and A. geoffroyi yucatanensis ). These are the first known infanticides and forced copulation in spider monkeys. Data were gathered from four neighboring communities of spider monkeys in Manu National Park at the Cocha Cashu Biological Station, Peru and two communi…

  • Fission-Fusion Dynamics: New Research Frameworks

    Filippo Aureli, Colleen M Schaffner et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2008•Cited by: 88•References: 114

Renewed interest in fission-fusion dynamics is due to the recognition that such dynamics may create unique challenges for social interaction and distinctive selective pressures acting on underlying communicative and cognitive abilities. New frameworks for integrating current knowledge on fission-fusion dynamics emerge from a fundamental rethinking of the term "fission-fusion" away from its current general use as a label for a particular modal typ…

  • Biodiversity conservation, traditional agriculture and ecotourism: Land cover/land use change projections for a natural protected area in the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

  • Intragroup lethal aggression in wild spider monkeys

Open Access•Alejandra Valero, Colleen M Schaffner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2006

We report the first evidence of intragroup coalitionary aggression leading to the death of a wild young adult male spider monkey. During a long‐term study of a well‐habituated community at the Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh reserve in Yucatan, Mexico, a young adult male sustained severe injuries repeatedly between January and March 2002. On 1 April 2002 the same male was the victim of an intragroup attack by at least one adult male that resulted in his d…

  • Raiding parties of male spider monkeys: Insights into human warfare

    Open Access•Filippo Aureli, Colleen M Schaffner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Cited by: 9•References: 54

Raids into neighboring territories may occur for different reasons, including the increase of foraging and mating opportunities directly or indirectly through the killing of neighboring rivals. Lethal raids have been mainly observed in humans and chimpanzees, with raiding males being reported to search purposefully for neighbors. Here we report on the first cases ever witnessed of raiding parties of male spider monkeys, a species expected to show…
