River Goddesses, Personhood and Rights of Nature: Implications for Spiritual Ecology
Designating rights for nature is a potentially powerful way to open up the dialogue on nature conservation around the world and provide enforcement power for an ecocentric approach. Experiments using a rights-based framework have combined in-country perspectives, worldviews, and practices with legal justifications giving rights to nature. This paper looks at a fusion of legal traditions, religious worldviews, and practices of environmental protec…

Images of Waste and Purification on the Banks of the Ganga
THESE PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES take the reader through the interstices of human civilization, to the places where waste accumulates, flows, and is "managed" by the state. Images of the sacred and profane and the notions of purity and material pollution associated with them are brought into stark relief to convey the argument that government, activist and Hindu understandings of the river Ganga are fundamentally incompatible. This incompatibility compl…
Gandhiji on the Central Vista: A Postcolonial Refiguring
Monuments, memorials and statues, so commonplace in squares and parks of late twentieth-century cities, have interesting histories and convey particular historiographies. In public arenas planned and maintained by state administrations, symbolic representations situated for the purpose of communicating messages to passersby, visitors, and residents often mark the state's attempt to control space, history and popular memory. By extension, changes …
The Historical Transformation of a Grassroots Environmental Group
This paper examines the historical transformation of a grassroots environmental group in Alabama's Black belt soils region. This group, known as Alabamians for a Clean Environment (ACE) formed with the specific purpose of closing down the nation's largest hazardous waste landfill just outside the town of Emelle in Sumter County. An examination of the agenda and activities of this group and the careers of its core members reveals struggles to mane…
Ganga and Gandagi: Interpretations of Pollution and Waste in Benaras
This essay examines interpretations of city waste by variously located Hindu residents of Benaras, a pilgrimage place and urban center in north-central India. The focus draws out views about the impact of waste on the river Ganga and addresses tensions played out in the community as government agencies develop the category of environmental pollution in official policy. Treating both power and struggle as processes that shape each other (Haynes an…
Heritage Conservation and Urban Development in India
This paper discusses the role a voluntary organization plays in the spatial definition and material conservation of cultural heritage in late twentieth century India. Voluntary organizations work in a broad range of fields in India, but the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) may be of particular interest to applied anthropologists because of its creative uses of anthropological concepts and methods. In addition, since th…
