    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck, Micheline Goche•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

  • True political representation of disadvantaged neighbourhoods

    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck, Mike Bramley•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

This article examines where Brussels parliamentary members live, looking at the evolution of this phenomenon over the past 20 years. The central question focuses on whether different neighbourhoods within the Brussels Capital Region also experienced a different pattern of representation throughout this period. The analysis shows that the centrally located poor neighbourhoods had little if any representation at the end of the 1980s, but that this …

  • L’intérêt pour le quartier

    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck, Micheline Goche•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

  • Crossing Borders

Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck, Tine De Rijck et al.•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

This contribution discusses the moves between the Brussels municipalities and the Brussels periphery in Flemish Brabant. Even in the most recent period, mainly young families moved to the periphery, leading to an impoverishment of Brussels. This observation is not new, but the socio-economic profile of the movers has rarely been examined. This study does so, confirming the perception of movers having higher incomes than the Brussels average. Inco…

    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

  • The interest of the neighbourhood

    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck, Mike Bramley•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

This article examines the extent to which certain types of neighbourhood are underrepresented or overrepresented in the Brussels municipal councils. It is found that as the prosperity of a neighbourhood increases, so does its representation. Neighbourhoods in difficulty therefore suffer from a double form of deprivation as not only do they accumulate a number of urban problems, but they are also underrepresented within municipal bodies. There are…

  • The Politicisation of Suburbanisation in Belgium

    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 33

The electoral and political consequences of suburbanisation recently regained interest in the Anglo-Saxon literature, pointing to a growing polarisation between city and suburban fringe. This paper analyses these processes in the Antwerp urban region and shows the development of a similar electoral divide that is supported by the political parties involved. These observations add to the existing evidence that city–suburban polarisation in Belgium…

  • The Suburbanisation of Political Representation in a Context of Proportional Representation

    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Economische en…•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Research on political representation of population groups is mostly based upon individual characteristics such as class, race and gender. This paper explicitly focuses on place characteristics. In particular, it deals with the changing places of residence of the Belgian members of parliaments in historical perspective, emphasising the suburbanisation of representation in a system of proportional representation. Spatial representation is analysed …

  • Is there a world beyond the Web of Science? Publication practices outside the heartland of academic geography

Open Access•Nick Schuermans, Bruno Meeus et al.•ARTICLE•Area•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 20

Because research on the publication practices of academic geographers has been limited to the quantification of journal articles cited in easily searchable databases such as Thomson Reuters' Web of Science or Elsevier's Scopus, the question remains whether journals that are not indexed by these databases flourish or perish under the increasing pressure to publish in outlets with the highest impact factors. To answer this question, we have compile…

  • Fear of crime as a political weapon

    Nick Schuermans, Filip De Maesschalck•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2010•Cited by: 16•References: 12

In this article, we discuss the recent success of extreme right politicians in the Flemish countryside. Because the Vlaams Belang, the dominant extreme right-wing party in Flanders, plays to racist attitudes and everyday fears, we study the interrelations between the rise of the extreme right, racism and a spatialized and racialized culture of fear. Based on a multi-level analysis of spatial variations of racism and a qualitative analysis of focu…

  • Beyond the Anglo-Saxon Experience

    Open Access•Filip De Maesschalck•ARTICLE•Espace populations sociétés•2009

The electoral and political consequences of suburbanization have recently reappeared as a research topic in the Anglo-Saxon academic world. These studies are almost exclusively focused on the Anglo-Saxon countries themselves. This paper aims at broadening the scope of this research and analyses the electoral and political impact of suburbanization in Brussels, the largest Belgian urban region. By means of electoral and survey data, it is shown th…

  • Revitalizing the City in an Anti-Urban Context

Open Access•Pascal De Decker, Christian Kesteloot et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2005•Cited by: 16•References: 3

After the 1995 elections, Flanders' first Minister of Urban Policy was appointed. The development of an urban policy during the second half of the 1990s in this region is incontestably linked to the election victories of the extreme right party, Vlaams Blok, in the bigger cities (particularly Antwerp and Gent). After a brief presentation of the geography of local elections, we try to explain this. This involves making the links between long-term …
