Tarik Sabry, Jamal Bahmad et al.•ARTICLE•Middle East Journal of Culture…•2025•References: 1

This article presents a critical examination of the challenges associated with grounding Moroccan cultural studies ( MCS ) in Moroccan academia. Drawing on their diverse experiences as teachers and researchers, the authors examine the institutional and epistemological constraints that underlie the historical marginalization of cultural studies within the Moroccan university system. These constraints range from Eurocentric curricula, a bureaucrati…

  • Transnational Hauntings

    Jamal Bahmad•ARTICLE•Expressions maghrébines•2019

This article looks at social inequality in Morocco to show how the specter of radical Islam has come to haunt this society in the era of neoliberal globalization. This argument will be illustrated through a close analysis of Laila Marrakchi's Marock (2005). This transnational Moroccan film depicts existential insecurity among upper-class youth isolated by wealth and its idioms in gated communities in Casablanca's suburbs. It also inadvertently un…

  • The Good Pirates

    Open Access•Jamal Bahmad•CHAPTER•The State of Post-Cinema•2016

This chapter argues against the grain of the pessimism characterizing the dominant discourse about the future of Moroccan cinema. Cinema closures and the prevalence of online and offline piracy are not life-threatening to Moroccan cinema. Instead, they are indicators of how this North African cinema has been adapting to the challenges of globalization and the digital revolution. Moroccan films are increasingly watched at home or on mobile devices…

  • Mapping Moroccan neoliberalism

    Jamal Bahmad•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2016•References: 6

Faced with a severe economic crisis and simmering social unrest in the early 1980s, Morocco embarked on a comprehensive IMF-designed programme of socioeconomic structural adjustment. Over the next decades, neoliberal market reforms ushered in new forms of spatial development and social relations in Moroccan cities. In the cultural field, a popular cinema was born in the early 1990s. What I call the New Urban Cinema (NUC) screened the complex stru…

  • From Slavery to the Screen

    Open Access•Jamal Bahmad•CHAPTER•Migrants au Maroc•2015

In recent years, there has been a remarkable growth in both global interest and academic research on migration in the Mediterranean region. The debates have been dominated by security questions and the increasing fortification of passageways into the global North. In the meantime, southern Mediterranean countries like Morocco have seen a rapid transformation from transit migration zones to destination countries on the edge of Fortress Europe. How…

    Jamal Bahmad•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Moroccan filmmakers have chronicled social change and youth's quest for postcolonial agency since the early 1990s. This article examines the representation of Moroccan youth on screen through a close analysis of two recent films on the alternative cultural scene in Casablanca at the turn of the twenty-first century. I will explore how Farida Benlyazid and Abderrahim Mettour's documentary Casanayda! (2007) and Ahmed Boulane's feature film The Sata…

  • From Casablanca to Casanegra

    Jamal Bahmad•ARTICLE•Middle East Journal of Culture…•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 6

This article deals with the two major actors in North Africa’s 2011 uprisings—namely, youth and the city—through a critical exploration of the cinematic realism that has defined Moroccan filmmakers’ response to the country’s socioeconomic transformation under neoliberal globalization since the 1980s. Taking Noureddine Lakhmari’s Casanegra (2008) as a case study, I argue that this aesthetic frame discloses the critical potential of everyday life a…
