  • Mind and Hand

    Glaire D Anderson•ARTICLE•Muqarnas Online•2020

This essay explores the symbiotic relationship between visual culture and the exact sciences that is revealed by the career of ʿAbbas b. Firnas (d. circa 876), as recounted in the Cordoban court chronicle compiled by the historian Ibn Hayyan (d. 1076), and by early scientific instruments from al-Andalus. Ibn Firnas is today remembered as a polymath and early scientist, yet neither historians of art nor of science have fully explored the implicati…

  • A mother's gift? Astrology and the pyxis of al-Mughīra

    Glaire D Anderson•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2015

This article re-examines the most celebrated, and most controversial, of the Cordoban ivories, the al-Mughīra pyxis, from a perspective of gender and kinship relations within the court hierarchy. It proposes an alternative patron for this object, namely al-Mughīra's mother al-Mushtaq, a consort of the Cordoban Umayyad caliph ʿAbd al-Rahmān III (r. 929–61) in the latter years of his life, and a patron of architecture. The article suggests astronom…

    Glaire D Anderson•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 8

This article focuses on the surviving arms of the ivory cross of San Millán de la Cogolla and proposes a new interpretation for its striking Córdoban visual aesthetic. The article rejects an interpretive framework privileging religious divisions between Muslims and Christians. Instead this essay emphasizes the kinship and political ties that connected the Andalusi caliph 'Abd al- Raḥmān III (r. 912–61) and Toda, Queen of Pamplona. Queen Tota, as …

  • Integrating the Medieval Iberian Peninsula and North Africa in Islamic Architectural History

    Glaire D Anderson•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 6

How do Islamic art survey texts present the architecture of the Islamic West, and how does this presentation shape the perception of the Maghrib in university classrooms? Examining the Great Mosque of Qayrawān and the Great Mosque of Cordoba as they appear in four representative and widely used art history survey texts, this article argues that a common art historical narrative characterises the art of early medieval North Africa as ultimately de…

  • Islamic Spaces and Diplomacy in Constantinople (Tenth to Thirteenth Centuries C.E.)

    Glaire D Anderson, Glaire Anderson•ARTICLE•Medieval Encounters•2008•Cited by: 4

This article focuses on the built spaces, often described as mosques, of two Muslim communities in Constantinople between the tenth and thirteenth centuries. These Islamic spaces in the Byzantine capital originated pragmatic solutions to the functional requirements of accommodating Muslim prisoners and merchants. During this period one of these built spaces acquired political status as “the mosque of Constantinople” in diplomatic negotiations, se…
