Patience, Cognitive Abilities, and Cognitive Effort: Survey and Experimental Evidence From a Developing Country
This study sheds light on the relationship between cognition and patience by documenting that the correlation between cognitive abilities and delay discounting is weaker for the same group of individuals if choices are incentivized. This study conjectures that higher cognitive effort, which induces higher involvement of the cognitive system, moderates the relationship between patience and cognition. For 107 participants drawn from the adult popul…

Wage Policies of a Russian Firm and the Financial Crisis of 1998: Evidence from Personnel Data, 1997 to 2002
The authors use a rich personnel data set from a Russian firm for the years 1997 to 2002 to analyze how the firm adjusts wages and employment during this period in which local labor market conditions changed in the aftermath of the financial crisis in 1998. They relate the development of turnover and wages for various employment categories to alternative models of wage and employment determination. The authors argue that the firm's behavior is co…
The Cambridge History of Christianity
This authoritative volume presents the history of Christianity from the eve of the Protestant Reformation to the height of Catholic Reform. In addition to in-depth coverage of the politics and theology of various reform movements in the sixteenth century, this book discusses at length the impact of the permanent schism on Latin Christendom, the Catholic responses to it, and the influence on the development of the Orthodox churches. This comprehen…
Miracles Within Catastrophes: Some Examples from Early Modern Germany
On September 11, 2001, a small church next to Ground Zero survived almost unharmed, adjacent to the place where the famous Twin Towers had once stood. Journalists who reported the disaster and who saw the location of this little church talked of a miracle. This was the only word available to them in order to explain what seemed to be inexplicable otherwise. But in our secularized age, in none of the reports which I have read was a connection made…
Weber's Use of Scholarly Praise and Scholarly Criticism in The Protestant Ethic and the 'Spirit' of Capitalism
"Weber's Use of Scholarly Praise and Scholarly Criticism in "The Protestant Ethic and the 'Spirit' of Capitalism
The article examines how Max Weber positioned himself in relation to the scholarship of his time as he wrote The Protestant Ethic and the 'Spirit' of Capitalism. Some authors he praised and from others he distanced himself, and this provides insights into the tone and style of his arguments. In the first version of 1904/1905 he is cautious in his assessment of his sources, but in revising the essay in 1919 his comments show a new sharpness and se…
Hans Rogger as a Second Generation Refugee Historian
Eight years ago, my G6ttingen colleague Otto Gerhard Oexle and I were preparing a volume of essays in honor of my predecessor, Rudolf Vierhaus, for his 75th birthday.' We did not want to produce a medley of heterogeneous topics, so we had chosen a specific theme: essays from friends and colleagues of Vierhaus in which they would explain why, and under what circumstances, they had decided to study history in the late 1940s and early 1950s-why, in …
The History of Twentieth-Century Christianity as a Challenge for Historians
One hundred years ago, the discipline of church history was well established within institutions of higher learning in Western societies. The heirs of Leopold von Ranke and Philip Schaff were well versed in the range of topics that church history comprised. Church history was an integral part of the study of theology. Church historians published handbooks and had their own journals. All church historians-those with a Catholic and those with a Pro…

Introduction
The Suitability of the Tools Provided by Ernst Troeltsch for the Understanding of Twentieth-Century Religion
In German religious sociology there are few giants. Ernst Troeltsch, who first taught theology at the University of Heidelberg and later philosophy at the University of Berlin, is one of them. Among his many publications none is more influential and more impressive than Die Soziallehren der christlichen Kirchen und Gruppen,1 first published in 1912 and dedicated by him to the universities of Greifswald and Breslau which had recognised his scholar…
In and out of the Ghetto: Jewish-Gentile Relations in Late Medieval and Early Modern Germany
Sécularisation et remodelage de la religion
Secularization and transformation of religion In the work of Ernst Troeltsch, the theme of « transformation of religion through the passage to modernity » plays a most important role. The two texts given by Troeltsch in 1906, which the present paper deals with, show that Troeltsch, at that time, had only partially analyzed the problems of « secularization » and « transformation », and had not yet formulated clear answers to them. These would only…
In and out of the Ghetto: Jewish-Gentile Relations in Late Medieval and Early Modern Germany
In and out of the Ghetto: Jewish-Gentile Relations in Late Medieval and Early Modern Germany
During the 1920s much attention was paid to the history of Jews in Germany since the Enlightenment and the subject became popular again, with renewed emphasis, after 1945. Many historians were deeply committed to understanding and explaining the tragic path that led from the emancipation of the Jews to the Holocaust. For a long time, much less work was done on the history of Jews in Germany in earlier periods, particularly the period between the …

Weber's Protestant Ethic: Origins, Evidence, Contexts
The historical relationship between Protestantism, capitalism, and democracy remains one of the most controversial intellectual themes of out time. Max Weber's famous thesis about the link between the 'Protestant ethic' and the 'spirit of capitalism' and its dissolution in his own era has been both widely acclaimed and heatedly disputed since its publication in 1904–5. This volume, the result of an international, interdisciplinary effort, throws …
Pietism and Nationalism: The Relationship between Protestant Revivalism and National Renewal in Nineteenth-Century Germany
Any discussion of the relationship between Pietism and nationalism must start from a consideration of the two major works in this field: Koppel S. Pinson's Pietism as a Factor in the Rise of German Nationalism, published in 1934, and Gerhard Kaiser's Pietismus und Patriotismus im literarischen Deutschland, published in 1961. Both studies are valuable and lasting contributions to the topic. After presenting the main thesis of both works I will com…
Ascetic Protestantism and Economic Rationalism: Max Weber Revisited after Two Generations
Max Weber's essay on the relationship of ascetic Protestantism and the spirit of capitalism, published in 1904/05, is certainly the most controversial and perhaps the most complicated piece he wrote. As we all know, two generations of scholars have discussed Weber's essay since 1905, filling the shelves of libraries with the fruits of their labors. Scholars in different fields have expressed their own version of what Weber supposedly wanted to sa…

The Persecution of Witches as Restoration of Order: The Case of Germany, 1590s–1650s
From the late sixteenth to the late seventeenth century many of the territories and cities in Central Europe were the scene of witchcraft trials. As recent research shows, it was especially in the years around 1590, 1610, and 1630, and again in the 1650s, that many parts of Germany were overwhelmed by what might be called a tidal wave of witch-hunting, with thousands upon thousands of victims: women mostly, yet also men and children. So far, desp…

On Noel Morss' 'Cradled Infant Figurines
Recently Noel Morss published several recumbent figurines (American Antiquity, Vol. 18, No. 2, 1952) and pointed out the area of distribution of this type giving examples of Mexican as well as North American origin. His interpretation was that they represent children strapped to their cradles. As early as 1949 I published, in the first volume of 'Selected Papers of XXIX International Congress of Americanists' in New York, a paper on the same subje…

The Rise of Capitalism: Weber versus Sombart
On February 21, 1990, in a speech to both houses of Congress, the Czechoslovak playwright elected president, Vaclav Havel, explained that his country needed a great deal of assistance from the United States, not financial aid primarily, but help in other areas. Assistance, for example, in "how to educate our offspring," "how to elect our representatives," and "how to organize our economic life so that it will lead to prosperity and not to poverty…
