Putting the 1960s on Trial
In the 1970s and 1980s, federal prosecutors conducted three lengthy trials against Robert Rowbotham for importing and trafficking hashish, an increasingly popular part of Canada’s illegal cannabis market. Rowbotham, a “hippie capitalist,” made a defiant speech in defense of the counterculture after his 1976–77 trial, where writer Norman Mailer testified as a defense witness. In the early 1980s, after being released on early parole, Rowbotham beca…
The Folk Fight Back
This article examines part of the reaction to the 1969 cancellation of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (cbc) television’s Don Messer’s Jubilee , one of the most popular Canadian-produced programs of the era. In addition to an exploration of television history and popular culture, it is also a look at the neglected topic of “square” Canada in the 1960s. Messer began fiddling at dances in rural New Brunswick in the 1920s and moved to radio and re…

Canada’s First Celebrity Drug Trial
Since the 1960s, celebrity drug trials have usually involved actors or musicians. The first drug prosecution of a Canadian “celebrity” took place in 1985 after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) found a small amount of marijuana in the luggage of New Brunswick Premier Richard Hatfield at the airport in Fredericton. He was charged with simple possession and, aided by a team of lawyers, pleaded not guilty. Although Hatfield was the most succe…

Incriminating Conditions of the Body
In the third quarter of the twentieth century, attitudes toward and policies governing the sale and use of alcohol in Canada were liberalized. Alcohol problems were increasingly medicalized with an emphasis on individual alcoholics. In the criminal justice sphere, police, courts and jails were affected by a partial decriminalization of the traditional offence of public drunkenness. During the 1960s a lobby of safety experts advocated increased cr…

Alcohol and the Family in Canada
In the context of the family in Western society, alcohol often has been viewed as a problem. This article traces how the use of beverage alcohol in Canada related to the family in the transition from the preindustrial to late-twentieth-century era. Powerful temperance movements in the nineteenth century, and divisive prohibition policies in the early twentieth, attempted to protect the material and moral health of the family. Although liquor laws…
