Open Access•Alexander Angsongna, Moges Zewiddu Teshome et al.•ARTICLE•African studies quarterly•2025

This article looks into the resurgence of Pan-Africanism in the Sahel region, driven by bold political rhetoric and radical actions by leaders in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Amid rising anti-colonial sentiment, these nations are rejecting the remnants of France's neo-colonial influence, marked by efforts such as reducing the prominence of the French language in official contexts, promoting indigenous languages, and fostering regional solidarit…

Open Access•George Dakurah, Vincent de Paul Kanwetuu et al.•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2023

Using symbolic interactionism theory, this paper examines the role of sorghum in funeral celebrations among the Dagaaba of North-west Ghana. Employing mixed methods, the objectives are to examine: (1) the main stages of Dagaaba funerals, and (2) the symbolic and ritual uses of kagyin for funerals. The results revealed that kagyin is the first crop item that is placed beside a deceased to portray his/her farming trade whilst alive. Similarly, the …

  • Serial verb reduplication in the Mabia languages of West Africa

Open Access•Adams Bodomo, Adams B Bodomo et al.•ARTICLE•Legon Journal of the Humanities•2022

This paper introduces and discusses the notion of Serial Verb Reduplication (SVR) in two Mabia languages of West Africa, Dagaare and Kusaal. The authors show that the phenomenon of SVRs, though under-represented in the literature, has a wide scope occurrence in natural language usage within serializing languages. Theoretically, two lexical semantic notions: semantics of verbs (verb meaning) and pluraction, are advanced to explain the intricacies …

  • Tone and morphological level ordering in Dagaare

Open Access•Arto Anttila, Adams Bodomo et al.•ARTICLE•Phonology•2022

Dagaare is a language of northern Ghana and adjoining areas of Burkina Faso. There are two tones, H and L, and contrastive downstep H ! H that involves a non-automatic pitch drop between two H tones. The challenge is to explain the extensive morphological conditioning of tonal processes, including dissimilation, downstep and spreading. Our solution involves level ordering: tones are introduced at different morphological levels (stems, words and p…

  • On a dichotomy of question types: The case of Mandarin Chinese and Changsha Xiang

One-Soon Her, Dewei Che et al.•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2022

Contrary to the conventional three-way distinction of questions: polar questions, disjunctive questions, and wh -questions, we argue for a more revealing two-way distinction of polar versus constituent questions, the latter with two subtypes: disjunctive and wh -questions. Following Bhatt, Rajesh & Veneeta Dayal. 2020. Polar question particles: Hindi-Urdu kya. Natural Language & Linguistic Theory 38. 1115–1144 proposal that polar questions denote…

Open Access•Peizhen Zhao, Jiayu Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2022

Background: African migrants in China face social, structural, and cultural barriers to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing with scarce information on their HIV testing behaviours. This study estimated the prevalence of HIV testing and its social and behavioural correlates to understand how to better provide HIV testing services for African migrants living in China. Methods: We conducted a national cross-sectional survey among adult Africa…

  • Historical and contemporary perspectives on inequalities and well-being of Africans in China

    Open Access•Adams Bodomo, Adams B Bodomo•ARTICLE•Asian Ethnicity•2020•Cited by: 26•References: 29

This paper first outlines a brief history of the African presence in China since the Tang era, indicating that Africans have mostly lived on the margins of the Chinese society. It then highlights the contemporary presence of Africans in China since the turn of the Millennium, showing that while African traders and students have demonstrated a lot of resilience, the story of Africans living at the margins of the Chinese society has not changed muc…

  • Africa-China-Europe relations: Conditions and conditionalities

    Open Access•Adams Bodomo, Adams B Bodomo•ARTICLE•JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 3

This paper uses two concepts, conditions and conditionalities, to explain the differing approaches between China and the European Union (EU) in regards to how these two entities engaged African countries sociopolitically, socio-economically, and socio-culturally between 2000 and 2018. Using mixed methods (both qualitative and quantitative) to obtain data we argue that the EU tends to impose more conditionalities on African countries than China do…

We focus on the African community from Portuguese-speaking countries in Macau, outlining its internal organisation, memberships, objectives, and activities. The results of this study indicate that this African community is the most established and the best organised African communi…

  • A Kente of Many Colours: Multilingualism as a Complex Ecology of Language Shift in Ghana

Adams Bodomo, Adams B Bodomo et al.•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2010•Cited by: 2

Language shift, a process which may lead speakers to use their language in fewer domains with respect to other languages or even lose proficiency in their language altogether in favour of other languages, is a prominent concept in linguistics. But the concept has been mainly studied from Western perspectives (e.g. Fishman 1964, 1991; and Veltman 1983). This paper discusses language shift from the perspectives of Ghana, a highly multilingual devel…

  • Classifiers ≠ Determiners

Yicheng Wu, Adams Bodomo et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2009•Cited by: 10•References: 12

Cheng and Sybesma (1999, 2005) argue that classifiers in Chinese are equivalent to a definite article. We argue against this position on empirical grounds, drawing attention to the fact that semantically, syntactically, and functionally, Chinese classifiers are not on the same footing as definite determiners. We also show that compared with Cheng and Sybesma's ClP analysis of Chinese NPs (in particular, Cantonese NPs, on which their proposal cruc…

  • Information structuring in Akan question-word fronting and focus constructions

Open Access•Charles Marfo, Adams Bodomo et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•2005•Cited by: 4

Wh-question fronting and focus constructions in Akan have three structural characteristics in common: constituent fronting, introduction of a clitic morpheme after the fronted constituent, and pronoun resumption in a canonical clause position. In comparing these constructions to each other and to related canonical constructions, one is confronted with the question whether the same discourse-contextual information is consistently expressed in both…
