This article examines the history of, and legal precedent set by, Four B Manufacturing v. United Garment Workers of America, a 1980 Supreme Court of Canada case involving an Indigenous-owned manufacturing firm that resisted the efforts of its Indigenous and non-Indigenous workers to form a union on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, a reserve in southeastern Ontario. Frequently, workers and class conflict are obscured in or expunged from the official narratives of industrial heritage. Critical reflections on the job guarantee proposal
This article assesses the job guarantee (JG) from two angles. First, by tracing some of the JG’s intellectual origins in the inflationary crises of the 1970s, it questions contemporary claims about the JG’s potential to increase workers’ bargaining power. Second, it critiques antiwelfare thinking among JG advocates by showing how their normative claims about the dignity of employment both obscure the centrality of unpaid social reproductive labou…
The Forgotten Work of Cultural Workers
This paper is based on work history interviews with a group of nine Toronto theatre workers covering a three-year period. During the interviews, participants did not spontaneously mention 13.1 per cent of their jobs in the creative cultural sector. Because forgotten work fails to register in surveys attempting to assess cultural workers' contributions to the economy or to ameliorate their precarious conditions, it is important to explore why and …
