A Latent Class Analysis of Interrupted Gender Transitions and Detransitions in the USA and Canada
Identifying Levers for Improvement
Research Findings: The present study investigates both the proximal processes and contextual influences on children’s oral language development in preschool. We examine whether teacher language practices vary across activity settings and program type, which teacher language practices predict children’s oral language skills, and potential differences in children’s language learning trajectories. The instructional time in a diverse sample of 15 pre…
Exploring classroom practices associated with greater student engagement that may benefit low-income students in the early grades
Previous research has identified specific classroom practices that are associated with greater academic and self-regulation gains for students in prekindergarten (PreK) and kindergarten (K) classrooms. These practices include reducing time in transition, more time in sequential activities, more opportunities for associative and cooperative interactions, more math, teachers’ using higher levels of instruction, positive classroom climate, and more …

Repeat Tragedy
The authors examine rampage shootings in American high schools after 2002 and consider whether factors identified in their prior research on rampages from 1974 to 2002 account for the more recent cases. The authors find that the five factors-social marginality, individual predisposing factors, cultural scripts, failure of the surveillance system, and availability of guns-remain important features. The authors then contrast these high school shoot…
Are We There Yet? Reflections on the 2008 Political Scene
Public sociologists have hit the trail this year in blogs, op-eds, essays, and designed to shine an analytic light on what feels-for better or worse-like the longest running presidential in history. Candidates have been no less prolific, pro viding the public more than one best-selling biography and assorted campaign books designed to lay out their political philosophies and the personal experiences that have led them to their convictions. Politi…

Socioeconomic Disparities In Health
Socioeconomic status (SES) underlies three major determinants of health: health care, environmental exposure, and health behavior. In addition, chronic stress associated with lower SES may also increase morbidity and mortality. Reducing SES disparities in health will require policy initiatives addressing the components of socioeconomic status (income, education, and occupation) as well as the pathways by which these affect health. Lessons for U.S…
No Shame
Wacquant’s essay is less a review of three ethnographies about the inner city than a throwback to the sectarian days when leftists who failed to toe the Party line were deemed objective enemies of the working class. In this instance, we are told that research by Duneier (1999), Anderson (1999), and Newman is exhibit A for the charge “that U.S. sociology is now tied and party to... the neoliberal state and its ‘carceral-assistential complex ’ for …
Urban Poverty after The Truly Disadvantaged
In what follows we critically assess a selection of the works on urban poverty that followed the publication of WJ Wilson's The Truly Disadvantaged ( 1987 ), with a particular focus on the family, the neighborhood, and culture. We frame our discussion by assessing the broad explanations of the increased concentration of poverty in urban neighborhoods characteristic of the 1970s and 1980s. Then, in the section on the family, we address the rising …

Social Status and Minority Recruit Performance in the Navy
Aptitude, motivation, training completion, and job survival measures were compared for 1,091 blacks, 192 Hispanics, 186 Asian, and 1,785 white recruits who entered Navy paramedical training during 1973. The minority groups were found to have lower aptitude and motivation scores, on the average, than the majority group, but tended to do as well as, and in some cases better than, the majority group on the performance measures. The effect of social …
