  • Contradiction

Edith S Klein, Linda Jaivin et al.•BOOK•Contradiction•2022

In the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the many facets of crisis-the theme of last year's China Story Yearbook-fractured into pictures of contradiction throughout Chinese society and the Chinese sphere of influence

  • Reading Sima Qian from Han to Song

Edith S Klein, Esther S Klein•BOOK•Reading Sima Qian from Han to Song•2018

In Father of Chinese History, Esther Klein explores the life and work of the great Han dynasty historian Sima Qian as seen by readers from the Han to the Song dynasties. Today Sima Qian is viewed as both a tragic hero and a literary genius. • Did the Chinese Have a Change of Heart?

    Open Access•Edith S Klein, Esther Klein et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•2012

We raise three methodological objections to their analysis. First, the change over time that they find is largely driven by genre. Second, the operationalization of WFD is potentially misleading. And, third, dating the texts they use is extremely controversial. We conclu…

  • Were there “Inner Chapters” in the Warring States? A New Examination of Evidence about the Zhuangzi

    Edith S Klein, Esther Klein•ARTICLE•T oung Pao•2010

This article questions the traditional beliefs that the seven “inner chapters” constitute the earliest stratum of the Zhuangzi, that they already formed a coherent unit in the Warring States, and that they came from a single hand. After reviewing what is known about the early history of the Zhuangzi text, various arguments that have been made in support of early, coherent inner chapters, are examined. Taking the Shiji portrait of the Zhuangzi as …

  • Aiding and Abetting

    Open Access•Edith S Klein•ARTICLE•Refuge Canada s Journal on Refuge•1994

Probably the most vivid images in Western minds of the wars in Croatia and in Bosnia-Herzegovina are those of columns of people marching away from their burned-out villages, or of children leaving their parents and boarding buses to escape from their war-ravaged cities. These images are more than merely symbolic. Indeed, the massive movement of citizens of the former Yugoslavia away from their homes-whether a farm in a village caught in the cross…
