Recalibrating Socially Necessary Labor or Else
This article adds to the debate surrounding the analyses of Rieu and Basu et al. on value production effects of labor intensification. First, contrary to the claims of Basu, Hass, and Moraitis, the method of recalibrating socially necessary labor is shown to be consistent with Marx’s text and to provide an intuitive interpretation. Furthermore, the issue of recalibration is argued to be related to a deeper understanding of the relationship betwee…
Labor Intensification and Value Production
This article serves as a commentary on Basu, Haas, and Moraitis’s (BHM’s) analysis of labor intensification. While endorsing the ramifications of BHM’s differentiation between labor’s capacity to process inputs into output per unit of time and labor’s capacity to create value per unit of time, I augment the discourse by introducing two supplementary considerations. First, it is erroneous to directly extrapolate the outcomes of the one-sector mode…
A Mathematical Approach to Marxian Value Theory
A Mathematical Formulation of the Dual Nature of Unproductive Labor
In this paper, we present a novel model that explicitly formalizes the dual nature of unproductive labor and derives the optimal size of the unproductive sector. Two sets of results emerge regarding the relationship between the unproductive sector and the profitability and accumulation of capital. First, when the unproductive sector does not make any contribution to improving the efficiency of productive labor’s value creation process, the unprod…
Unproductive Activities and the Rate of Surplus Value at the Industry Level in Korea, 1995-2015
In order to explain how the Korean economy underwent structural change through the two crises of 1997- 1998 and 2008 within the context of globalisation, this article focuses on class analysis and inter-sectoral value transfer by estimating the sectoral rates of exploitation along with the sectoral monetary expressions of labour time. Our data indicate the possibility that the expansion of unproductive activities, accompanied by intensification o…
Generalizing the New Interpretation of the Marxian Value Theory
This article elucidates the relation between price and labor content in the context of generalizing the New Interpretation of Marxian value theory. We examine a generalized New Interpretation in a linear economic model introducing a differential value-creating capacity of different concrete labors, which regards price, value and the profit rate as random variables. Simulations are performed by constructing stochastic models with labor heterogenei…
The Determination of the Monetary Expression of Concrete Labor Time under the Inconvertible Credit Money System
This paper tries to answer the important question: how is the “monetary expression of labor time” (MELT) determined under the inconvertible credit money system? We provide a clear definition of the inconvertible credit money system by differentiating four monetary regimes. It is argued that the dynamic between changes in the quantity of money and prices should be explained on a sectoral level. A key element in explaining this dynamic is found in …
Estimating Sectoral Rates of Surplus Value
The ‘New Interpretation’ (NI) argues that Marxian value categories can be measured using price variables through the concept of monetary expression of labour time (MELT). Starting from the central insight of the NI, this paper focuses on the estimation of sectoral rates of surplus value. It will be suggested that the MELT is decomposed into two concepts, ‘value expression of labour time’ and ‘monetary expression of value’. As a result of this the…
A Reexamination of the Quantitative Issues in the New Interpretation
This article evaluates the new interpretation (NI) of Marxian value theory consistent with its inherent logic. The problem of double counting will be examined thoroughly. The relationship between the NI's value of labor power and bundle of wage goods will also be discussed. While the NI generally emphasizes aggregate variables, this article will demonstrate that its inherent logic implies a specific quantitative relationship on the micro level be…
