Lexical Variation and Change in the Bavarian, Franconian and Swabian Dialects of Bavaria
This study provides the first systematic combined real- and apparent-time analysis of onomasiological lexical variation and change in the Bavarian, Franconian, and Swabian dialects of Bavaria (Germany). Drawing on two large-scale indirect surveys—the Maurer questionnaires (collected in 1934), and the DaBay dialect app (2025–ongoing)—we examine five lexical concepts (ant, apple core, rooster, potato, and ladybug) using descriptive mapping and Gene…
Konstruktionen zum Ausdruck von Progressivität in den mittelbairischen Dialekten Oberösterreichs
The present study investigates variation and change in constructions expressing progressivity in the Central Bavarian dialects of Upper Austria. For this purpose, an apparent-time study was conducted by means of an online survey. Results show that although the participants accept a wide range of syntactic constructions for expressing progressivity, they do not use them with equal frequency. The variant with finite Verb (Vfin) dominates by far in …
Explaining morpho-syntactic variation and change
This paper aims to explain recent empirical findings on subjunctive II formation in the Bavarian dialects of Austria from both functional and formal perspectives. For this purpose, the explanatory power of the functional principles of natural morphology (NM) is compared with the formal framework of constructional morphology (CxM). It is argued that the two approaches complement each other. Thus, it is shown that the key concepts of NM (constructi…
Does the linguistic market explain sociolinguistic variation in spoken Swiss Standard German
This paper shows (a) how the concept of the linguistic market can be operationalized as an index to enable its inclusion as a factor in variationist analysis and (b) how this index helps to explain sociolinguistic variation in a diglossic situation. To do this, sociolinguistic interviews were conducted in Swiss Standard German among 16 L1-dialect-speakers aged between 19 and 40 from Biel/Bienne in western Switzerland. Drawing from participants’ s…
Effects and perception of multimodal recontextualization in political Internet memes. Evidence from two online experiments in Austria
Internet memes are an integral part of social media communication and a popular genre for humorous engagement in online political discourses. A meme is a collective of multimodal signs that refer to each other through shared formal, content-related, and/or stance-related characteristics and can be recontextualized on different levels: (1) language, (2) mode of presentation, and (3) humor. In this paper, we examine the perceptions and effects of r…
Geolinguistic structures of dialect phonology in the German-speaking Alpine region
The Alpine region stands out in the German-speaking world for its well-preserved traditional dialects, which continue to play a significant role in daily life. However, the vast geographical range of the Alpine region and the limitations imposed by national and regional borders have hindered comprehensive investigations of the entire Alpine area. To overcome these obstacles, this study utilizes crowdsourcing data from the VerbaAlpina project to i…
Revisiting areal and lexical diffusion
This paper investigates the geographical and structural diffusion of "Viennese Monophthongization" (VM). By means of a new numerical measure to assess and compare formant movement in 18 lexical items, we provide evidence that VM is an ongoing, regular sound change transforming [aɛ̯] and [aɔ̯] gradually into [æː] and [ɒː]. Data are based on direct dialect recordings of 76 speakers in two age groups in 19 eastern and central Austrian rural location…
Welchen Einfluss nimmt der Bildungsgrad auf die k-Affrizierung im Schweizer Standard
This paper explores sociolinguistic variation found for the phonetic variable (k) in Swiss Standard German. Data is based on sociolinguistic interviews, including conversational passages, two reading tasks, and translation tasks, gathered from 16 Biel-born adults (all working and living in Biel) ranging from age 19 to 39. Results show that educational level is a robust predictor for explaining (k) variation (i. e. [kh] vs. [kx]). Secondary educat…
Die Konjunktiv-II-Bildung im Kontext von Partikelverben in den Basisdialekten Salzburgs
Focusing on phrasal verbs such as einbringen ‘to harvest’ or abbringen ‘to dissuade’, the aim of the present exploratory apparent-time study is to uncover factors affecting the subjunctive II formation in the traditional base dialects of Salzburg (Austria). Depending on whether the subjunctive II formation is synthetic or periphrastic, phrasal verbs are formed in contact position (e. g., würde/täte abbringen ‘would dissuade’) or in distance posit…
Der Konjunktiv II in den ruralen Basisdialekten Österreichs
Until today, variation and change in the use of subjunctive II variants in the dialects of Austria have been poorly studied. Largely neglected by traditional dialectology, even more recent studies neither consider all dialect regions of Austria, nor do they go into detail about intra-linguistic factors. Furthermore, an integration into morpho-syntactic theories of language change is missing. This paper addresses the above-mentioned desiderata. Us…

Introduction
The overall theme of this special issue is intra-individual variation, that is, the observable variation within individuals’ behaviour, which plays an important role in the humanities area as well as in the social sciences. While various fields have recognised the complexity and dynamism of human thought and behaviour, intra-individual variation has received less attention in regard to language acquisition, use and change. Linguistic research so …
Intra-individual variation across the lifespan
This article explores intra-individual variation and language change across the lifespan of eight speakers from a small Austrian village. Four phonological variables in two settings (informal conversation vs. formal interview) are traced across longitudinal panel data that span 43 years. The analysis reveals an increase of dialect features (retrograde change), even though apparent-time as well as real-time trend studies indicate dialect loss in t…
Reihenschritte im rezenten Lautwandel
A popular thesis in both traditional and also structural dialectology is that vowels of the same class change in the same manner -this is called "Reihenschrittgesetz" (= parallel movement law) (cf. Pfalz 1918). The aim of this paper is to re-examine this "law" by investigating recent reflexes of MHG -oe - in traditional rural South and South-Central Bavarian dialects. Based on a comprehensive dialectal survey, real-and apparent-time comparisons a…
