  • Channels of Human Communication

Open Access•Perry Maxfield Waldman Sherouse, Perry Sherouse•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2020

The concept of “channel” is central to models of communication, information theory, and media studies. Recent scholarship on communicative infrastructure, including new mate…

  • The Politics of Russian-Language Film Showings in Post-Soviet Georgia

    Open Access•Perry Sherouse•ARTICLE•PoLAR Political and Legal…•2017•References: 22

A law was implemented in Georgia in 2011 that required all foreign films to be shown with Georgian state language dubbing or subtitling. At that time, Russian was the default language of film showings. A year later, the largest movie theater in Tbilisi was fined for showing films in Russian language without Georgian state language subtitling or dubbing. This fine, however, had little effect on film-showing practices. I describe how media-language…

At the Georgian Weightlifting Federation in Tbilisi, Georgia, a mainstay of coaching is the training cue, a shouted word or phrase that coaches use to prompt weightlifters to perform in a certain psychological, physical, or technical way. In this practice, coaches cultivate and naturalize dimensions of physiology and psychology, aligning masculinity with animality, lack of restraint, and emotional surfeit, and femininity with gracefulness, contro…

Florian Mühlfried provides an answer by investigating Tusheti, a region in Georgia located in close vicinity to the border with Chechnya and Dagestan. The Tushetians number roughly 12 thousand and are settled mainly in two villages in Georgia, Kvemo Alvani and Zemo Alvani, located in the plains and at the foothills of the Ca…

In Georgia, a law enacted on January 1, 2011 mandated that all foreign language films possess either Georgian dubbing or subtitling for public film showings. This legal measure was targeted at removing Russian presence in film language, as part of then-President Saakashvili's shift away from alignments with Russia and Russianness in Georgian public cultural life. This article investigates the ideological and institutional dimensions of the creati…
