Punktike ja palatalisatsioon. Lähivaade XIX sajandi esimese poole kirjaviisiuuendusele
Palatalization is not indicated in standard Estonian orthography. In the 1820s, Otto Wilhelm Masing proposed marking palatalization with a small dot placed beneath the vowel preceding the palatalized consonant. This article examines the extent to which Masing’s proposal was adopted and explores the reasons why the palatalization mark ultimately failed to become part of standard written Estonian. Masing also introduced the letter õ to distinguish …
Ning-ist ja-ni ja edasi
From ning to ja and beyond This article examines the occurrence and functional distribution of the linguistic units ja and ning (‘and’) in early written Estonian texts. In modern Estonian, ja and ning are high-frequency synonymous coordinating conjunctions, whose functions have been described in previous linguistic studies and subjected to prescriptive language regulation. The corpus-based study reveals that while the conjunction ning appears in …
Isiku mitu nägu kriisisuhtluses
Artikkel annab ülevaate mitmuse esimese isiku väljendamise vahendite (verbivormid ja asesõnad) ja viisakusväljendite (ekspressiivsed kõneaktid palumine, vabandamine ja tänamine) kasutamisest koroonapiirangusiltidel. Uurimuse lähtematerjal oli 900 koroonapiirangute uksesilti perioodist 13.03.2020–29.11.2021. Analüüsi eesmärk on iseloomustada sildi autori (saatja) sõna- ja vormivalikutes avalduvaid keskseid interpersonaalseid strateegiaid. Analüüsi…
Partitive, genitive or nominative
The object has two variants in Estonian: partial object (in partitive, the functionally unmarked variant) and total object (in genitive or nominative). We examine the variation in object case in Estonian texts from the 17th to the 20th century, focusing on the 19th century and regarding this variation as an indicator in assessing the sociolinguistic variation of Estonian in texts. The texts of Old Literary Estonian were written by German scholars…
Vist või kindlasti? Tõenäosuspartikli vist pikk teekond eesti kirjakeeles
Artiklis keskendume episteemilise partikli vist sisu ja vormi muutumisele eesti kirjakeele tekstides vanimatest kirjapanekutest kuni tänapäevani. Tänapäeval väljendab vist keelekasutaja ebakindlust edastatava info tõesuse suhtes (vt EKI ühendsõnastik 2021; Hennoste jt 2021). Vanades tekstides esineb vist oma varasemal, lühenemata kujul vissist(i) ning väljendab kindlust, mitte ebakindlust. Protsessi, mille käigus täistähenduslikest adverbidest k…
Komplementlausega predikaatidel põhinevate diskursusemarkerite kasutus eri registrites
Artiklis käsitleme diskursusemarkereid, mis on kujunenud kõnelejat tähistava tegevussubjektiga pealausest, millele järgneb komplementlause (Ma arvan, et see kana on surnud.). Selliseid markereid nimetatakse ingliskeelse terminiga complement-taking predicate markers (CTP-markers), meie kasutame eestikeelset terminit komplementlausega predikaatidel põhinevad markerid, lühidalt KP-markerid. KP-markerid esinevad eri keeltes (nt ingl I think, I guess…
Baltisaksa periood eesti keele korralduses (Vaateid eesti keelekorralduse arenguloole)
2022. aasta aprillis tähistasime eesti rahvusliku keelekorralduse 150. aastapäeva. Sellele mõeldes on õige hetk veel kord tagasi vaadata keelekorralduse „eelajale”, baltisaksa misjonilingvistide perioodile eesti kirjakeele kirjeldamisel ja kujundamisel. Selline tagasivaade tuletab ühtlasi meelde, et teadliku keelearendustöö esimesed dokumendid on XVII sajandi baltisaksa pastorite koostatud keeleõpetused, milles kirjeldati eesti keelt luterliku m…
Kuue (inter)subjektiivsuspartikli kasutus eesti keele registrites
The use of six (inter)subjectivity particles in Estonian registers The article analyzes the usage of three epistemic particles (vist, ilmselt, tegelikult) and three attitude particles (Ãμnneks, kahjuks, paraku) in texts belonging to different registers of Estonian: spoken interaction (institutional and everyday), online texts (instant messaging and comments), printed texts (prose fiction, journalism, and academic texts). The research material com…
Ei saa me läbi “Pragmaatika” korpuseta. Korpuspragmaatika ja pragmaatikakorpus
Within the project “Pragmatics above grammar: Subjectivity and intersubjectivity in Estonian registers and text types” (PRG341) we are studying the expression of subjectivity and intersubjectivity in different written and spoken registers of modern Estonian. We focus on adverbs that function as discourse markers (e.g. vist ‘maybe, probably’, ilmselt ‘apparently, obviously’, tegelikult ‘actually’), markers that develop from main clauses containing…
Diskursusemarker (ma) arvan (et)
The discourse marker (ma) arvan (et) â i thinkâ The article analyzes the usage of variants of the discourse marker (ma) arvan (et) in different registers of Estonian. The use of this marker is compared in 15 text groups, which can be grouped into three registers: printed texts, online texts and spoken texts. The research material comes from the corpora available on Keeleveeb as well as corpora of spoken language and online conversations and conta…
Introduction
Variation is a universal phenomenon permeating language, culture, and the entire worldview. It characterizes human linguistic ability in the broadest sense. The current edition focuses on language variation which is examined from different angles: concentrating on the stability or variability of different levels and components of language, comparing morphosyntactic and semantic patterns in different languages, examining how mechanisms of human co…
Saama-Verb Grammatilistes Konstruktsioonides
Verb saama on eesti keeles üks polüseemsemaid. Oleme varem Keeles ja Kirjanduses kirjeldanud semantilisi kategooriaid, mida selle verbiga eesti kirjakeeles väljendatakse.(1) Siinses artiklis tulevad vaatluse alla grammatilised kategooriad, mida saama-abiverb konstruktsioonis infiniitse põhiverbiga väljendada võimaldab. Lähtume eeldusest, et grammatilised kasutusjuhud on välja kujunenud kesksete leksikaalsete kasutusmustrite põhjal ning on nendega…

Grammaticalization of Estonian saama ‘to get’
This paper presents an overview of the history and usage of the Estonian verb saama ‘to get’. We take the grammaticalization approach which posits that, diachronically, the language unit undergoing grammaticalization becomes more and more abstract, both semantically and functionally. Here we present the grammaticalization story of what was originally a motion verb, which becomes a modal and future auxiliary through various transitional stages
Developmental paths of interrogative particles
The primary means for expressing polar questions in Estonian are particles positioned at the beginning or the end of a sentence. We trace the development of these question particles from the seventeenth century until to the present day. In the course of time new particles emerged and older ones changed their function. Such functional shifts included, among others, the loss of negative or affirmative polarity, the loss of interrogativity, or the a…
