Non-Pronominal Intransitive Verb Variants with Property Interpretation: A Characterization
In this paper, we study a syntactic construction that has received little attention in the study of Spanish grammar (La masa de pizza congela perfectamente, ‘Pizza dough freezes perfectly’). It is characterized by the presence of a verb in a non-pronominal intransitive variant, with property interpretation. This construction is related to mediopassive sentences or generic middles (Las camisas de algodón se lavan fácilmente, ‘Cotton shirts wash ea…
Formación de palabras y variación: Algunas reflexiones a partir de ejemplos del español
Durante mucho tiempo, la atención de los lingüistas interesados en el estudio de la variación se ha centrado fundamentalmente en la variación fónica y en la variación léxica. Más recientemente la variación gramatical ha comenzado a constituirse también en objeto de estudio. En el caso de la variación morfológica, sin duda los fenómenos relacionados con la morfología flexiva han recibido una mayor atención que aquellos concernientes a la formación…
Morphology, argument structure, and lexical semantics: The case of Spanish auto- and co- prefixation to verbal bases
Article Morphology, argument structure, and lexical semantics: the case of Spanish auto- and co- prefixation to verbal bases was published on March 4, 2003 in the journal Linguistics (volume 41, issue 3)
Output constraints on two Spanish word-creation processes
This paper deals with two apparently unrelated Spanish word-creation processes: trisyllabic nominal truncation and -ata/-aca suffixation. We claim that it is possible to account for these two morphological processes in a unified way. Our analysis is based on Colina's (1996) and Pineros's (2000a, 2000b) account of Spanish standard nominal truncation and hypocoristic formation, developed within optimality theory. The word-creation processes that we…
