Background: Writing is a complex activity involving various cognitive processes in the planning, the transcription and the revision of written texts. The present study focused on the revision of written texts within a developmental approach.Aims: The study aimed to examine whether children and adults use different procedures to detect and revise erroneous grammatical agreements. It was predicted that children would use a slow algorithmic procedur…
Effects of semantic variables on the subject—verb agreement processes in writing
Two experiments are reported in which participants were orally presented with French sentences that they were required to write down. In a single‐task condition, only single sentences were presented and the written recall concerned only these sentences. In a dual‐task condition, a second task was added: to memorize an additional list of words or to do mental addition while writing down the sentences. The experimental sentences were all of the typ…

The effects of the codability and discriminability of the referents on the collaborative referring procedure
Clark & Wilkes-Gibbs (1986) proposed a model of verbal cooperation accounting for how the participants in a conversation coordinate in the making of references. The model is conceived in terms of how a process of mutual acceptance gets initiated, carried through, and completed in a task where people converse about arranging complex figures into one particular order. One aim of the present study was to test the replicability of Clark & Wilkes-Gibb…
How to make young children produce cleft sentences
The present study focuses on the effects of contextual demands on the selection of a particular syntactic device, in asking whether French-speaking children from 4 to 10 years old will spontaneously produce it -cleft sentences if there is a functional necessity arising from the context. Taking into account recent studies that have specified the discourse function(s) served by this marked sentence form, it was hypothesized that the cleft formulati…
The other side of johnson‐laird's interpretation of the passive voice
Two studies by Johnson‐Laird (1968 a, b ) were guided by the notion that the function of the passive is to emphasize the importance of the logical object (LO) by placing it in the grammatical subject position. However, the a priori meaning assigned to the subjects' responses implied that ‘importance’ attaches to the entity which is represented by the larger area in a coloured strip. It will be shown that this is merely one of two possible interpr…
