  • Processing dissociations between raising and control in Brazilian Portuguese

Open Access•Dimple Merchant, Doug Merchant et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2024•References: 7

Generative approaches to syntactic control have traditionally viewed it as a distinct component of the grammar, one that governs the interpretation and distribution of the empty category (EC) PRO. However, the M ovement T heory of C ontrol (MTC) proposes that control should instead be conceived of as a form of raising, with both sentence types involving the EC DP/NP T race . In addition to theoretical arguments, some behavioral research on antece…

  • What Formal Approaches to Syntactic Interfaces Can Tell Us about the Syntax of Preverbal and Prenominal Constituents in Galician

    Open Access•Timothy Michael Gupton, Brian Gravely•ARTICLE•Languages•2024•References: 73

An important line of research within a generative, formal approach to syntax in the early 21st century has centered on exploring phenomena related to the interface between syntax and other linguistic modules in human language. In this paper, we review the notion of interfaces and how they have been viewed within formal theoretical approaches to monolingual and bilignual competence and language acquistion, noting their relevance as they relate to …

  • Why we need a gradient approach to word order

Open Access•Natalia Levshina, Savithry Namboodiripad et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 209

This article argues for a gradient approach to word order, which treats word order preferences, both within and across languages, as a continuous variable. Word order variability should be regarded as a basic assumption, rather than as something exceptional. Although this approach follows naturally from the emergentist usage-based view of language, we argue that it can be beneficial for all frameworks and linguistic domains, including language ac…

  • Gabriel Rei-Doval and Fernando Tejedo-Herrero: Lusophone, Galician, and Hispanic linguistics. Bridging frames and traditions

  • Focus at the syntax–discourse interface in L2 Spanish: Optionality and unaccusativity reconsidered

    Open Access•Timothy Michael Gupton, Silvia Sánchez Calderón•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 14

We examine the second language (L2) acquisition of variable Spanish word order by first language (L1) speakers of English via the acquisition of unaccusative and transitive predicates in various focus-related contexts. We employ two bimodal linguistic tasks: (1) acceptability judgment task (B-AJT) and (2) appropriateness preference task (B-APT). Both present contextualized prompts similar to previous studies, followed by response options with acc…

  • Teaching Hispanic Linguistics: Strategies to Engage Learners

Stephanie M Knouse, Timothy Michael Gupton et al.•ARTICLE•Hispania•2015

Even though many post-secondary institutions offer a variety of Hispanic linguistics classes (Hualde 2006; Lipski 2006), research on the pedagogy of Hispanic linguistics is an underdeveloped or non-existent area of the discipline. Courses in Hispanic linguistics can present not only linguistic challenges for non-native speakers of Spanish, but also conceptual obstacles, for many students lack a background in linguistics as an academic subject. Wh…

  • Experimental Methodologies: Two Case Studies Investigating the Syntax- Discourse Interface

Timothy Michael Gupton, Timothy Gupton et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone…•2013

The current article examines two experimental investigations of the syntaxdiscourse interface, which address theoretical questions in different ways: the first is an L1 investigation of Galician speakers in Gupton (2010) and the second is a dual investigation of L1 and L2 Spanish reported on in Leal Méndez & Slabakova (2011). These investigations gathered quantitative data via psycholinguistic tasks with accompanying audio utilizing the WebSurvey…
