  • Expressing the notion of purpose in English and Spanish instructions

    Susana Murcia-Bielsa, Judy Delin•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2001

Using a corpus of written consumer product instructions in English and Spanish, this paper provides a comparative description of the type and frequency of expressions used to convey the notion of an action’s PURPOSE or its goal. Based on our own observations and suggestions from previous literature, we present eight factors relevant to the choice between purpose expressions in both languages: the semantic relation underlying the purpose expressio…

  • Keeping in Step

    Judy Delin•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In this study, I examine the monologues given by instructors in step aerobics classes, focusing on the way language both arises out of ongoing action and is constitutive of it. Following Levinson (1992), I show how the structure of the activity constrains the interpretations that are made of the utterances that arise throughout the workout. Aerobics participants need specific pragmatic knowledge, a key part of which is the ability to detect and i…

  • The Function and Interpretation of Reverse Wh-Clefts in Spoken Discourse

    Open Access•Jon Oberlander, Judy Delin•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1996•Cited by: 7•References: 24

We examine the characteristics of the headless reverse wh-cleft, with a view to embedding its description into a model of discourse function. On the basis of 302 examples taken from the London-Lund Corpus of spoken English and on Collins' (1991) analysis of the same data, we discuss the distinctive features of the construction, as well as those it shares with other kinds of cleft. In common with other clefts, the reverse wh-cleft is presuppositio…

  • Syntactic constraints on discourse structure

    Open Access•Judy Delin, Jon Oberlander•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1995•Cited by: 10

In this paper, we present an account of the interpretation of it-cleft constructions that attempts to draw together the apparently diverse factors of aspect, information structure, syntax, and presupposition. We begin with the observation (due to Prince 1978) that some clefts have the effect of "backgrounding" the information they convey, and that, in addition, clefts appear to indicate that this information is in some sense "known fact." We also…

  • Properties of It -Cleft Presupposition

    Judy Delin•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•1992

It is generally accepted that it-clefts convey logical presuppositions. In this paper, I examine the properties of those presuppositions with a view to shedding some light on what function they serve in discourse. First of all, an examination of naturally occurring data shows that presuppositions of it-clefts are not normally composed of information that is already entailed by the context: they are frequently used to communicate wholly or partly …
