  • The Sino-Vietnamese Negative Prefixes bất, vô, phi and Their Coexistence with Sentential Negators

    Open Access•Giorgio Francesco Arcodia, Trang Phan•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•Referencias: 8

This paper presents a comprehensive synchronic and diachronic analysis of the Sino-Vietnamese negative prefixes bất (Chinese 不 bù), vô (無 wú), and phi (非 fēi), examining their historical development and modern usage in Vietnamese, with a comparative perspective on their Chinese equivalents. By investigating the interaction between these prefixes and Vietnamese sentential negators-such as the native chẳng and the Chinese-derived không-the study ex…

  • A synchronic and diachronic analysis of potential dāk 得 in Cantonese

Luisa Maria Paternicò, Giorgio Francesco Arcodia•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2023

The morpheme dāk 得 has a broad range of functions in modern Cantonese, including being used as a particle introducing an adverbial construction, as a particle introducing the so-called ‘potential complement’ (we refer to this as the ‘long potential’) and as a verbal (quasi-)suffix (the ‘short potential’), which indicates that the state of affairs denoted by the verb may happen. In this paper, we first offer a general introduction on dāk 得 in mode…

  • Tense as a Grammatical Category in Sinitic

    Open Access•Giorgio Francesco Arcodia•ARTICLE•Languages•2023•Referencias: 24

Sinitic languages are very often described as tenseless, since they are generally seen as lacking 'true' grammatical markers of tense: thus, the interpretation of time reference relies on other factors, such as aspect, modal verbs, and the use of time expressions. However, the debate concerning the tenseless nature of Chinese has not been settled yet: several types of items in Sinitic have been analyzed as expressing both aspect and tense, tense …

  • Macanese Negation in Comparative Perspective

    Open Access•Giorgio Francesco Arcodia•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Contact•2022•Referencias: 9

Macanese, the near-extinct Portuguese creole of Macao, is an Asian Portuguese Creole language closely related to Malaccan Papia Kristang. In this paper, I argue that a distinctive feature of Macanese vis-à-vis other Asian Portuguese Creoles is its system of negation; specifically, its usage of the negators nunca and nádi. Negators deriving from Portuguese nunca ‘never’ and não há-de ‘shall not’ are attested in several Asian Portuguese Creoles: wh…

  • On a possible convergence area in Northern China

    Giorgio Francesco Arcodia•ARTICLE•Cahiers de linguistique - Asie…•2021

The received view that the differences among Sinitic languages are mostly limited to their phonology and, to a lesser extent, to the lexicon (Chao 1968), has been challenged in recent years, with plenty of studies showing that Chinese ‘dialects’ are, indeed, diverse at all levels, including morphology and (morpho-)syntax (see Chappell 2015a for an overview). Some major differences within the Sinitic branch follow areal patterns, in which contact …

  • Chinese Linguistics

Giorgio Francesco Arcodia, Bianca Basciano et al.•BOOK•Chinese Linguistics•2021•Citada por: 6

Chinese linguistics, broadly understood as the scientific study of Sinitic languages and other languages of China, may be regarded both as an established and as an emerging subfield of linguistics and Chinese studies. The Chinese tradition of reflection on language and writing began even before the Imperial Age in China, and foreign scholars, often missionaries from the West, started writing grammars and treaties on Sinitic languages at least sin…

  • Coordinating nominal compounds

    Open Access•Giorgio Francesco Arcodia•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2018•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 21

Coordinating compounds, i.e. complex word forms in which the constituent lexemes are in a coordination relation, may be divided into two classes: hyperonymic, in which the referent of the whole compound is the "sum" of the meanings of the constituent lexemes (Korowaiyumdefól'(her) husband-wife, couple'; van Enk, Gerrit J., & Lourens de Vries. 1997.The Korowai of Irian Jaya: Their language in its cultural context. • Areal perspectives on total reduplication of verbs in Sinitic

Giorgio Francesco Arcodia, Bianca Basciano et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2015

The topic of reduplication in Sinitic languages has attracted much attention in the literature, but studies adopting a comparative and areal perspective are still lacking. This paper aims to analyse the correlations between form and function in reduplicating constructions in a sample of twenty Sinitic languages, representing eight branches of the family, comparing them to a set of fourteen non-Sinitic languages of the East- and Southeast Asian ar…

  • Differential Object Marking and identifiability of the referent

Open Access•Giorgio Iemmolo, Giorgio Francesco Arcodia•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2014•Citada por: 2

This paper examines the interaction of DOM with information structure in Mandarin Chinese. Despite the large amount of works on this topic, much remains to be explained, in particular with respect to some alternations that do not easily fit the explanations proposed so far in terms of affectedness, animacy and definiteness. Through the analysis of text excerpts taken from the Corpus of Modern Chinese of the Center for Chinese Linguistics (CCL) of…

  • Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives on Lexical Blending

Giorgio Francesco Arcodia, Vincent Renner et al.•BOOK•Cross-disciplinary perspectives…•2012

The volume brings together a well-selected collection of twelve articles providing a comprehensive and very informative summary of contemporary work on lexical blending. It combines theoretically informed descriptions of a variety of languages and a number of contributions with a theoretically original focus. It is the first book of its kind on the subject, and because of its cross-disciplinary nature, it is of high relevance not only to word-for…

  • Coordinating Compounds

    Open Access•Giorgio Francesco Arcodia•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2010•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 11

Coordinating compounds, often referred to by their Sanskrit name dvandva, may be loosely defined as complex word forms in which all of the constituent lexemes (typically, two) share the same status, as Eng. bittersweet. The definition and delimitation of the category of coordinating compounds involves two issues: first, what a 'compound' is and how do we distinguish coordinating compounds from other multiword expressions; secondly, the understand…
