  • Il cimbro

    Open Access•Ermenegildo Bidese•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2024

The aim of this contribution is to present the long history of linguistic research on Cimbrian, an alloglotte variety of Germanic origin, spoken historically in the mountains of the present provinces of Verona and Vicenza and in southern Trentino, and still used in the municipality of Lusèrn/Luserna. Moreover, the main linguistic features of Cimbrian, in particular the variety of Lusèrn/Luserna, will be presented. Finally, I will discuss some ini…

  • A modal account of syntactically non-integrated von wegen in contemporary German

Open Access•Manuela Caterina Moroni, Ermenegildo Bidese•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2024

This study aims to account for the German expression von wegen (literally ‘of ways’) when used outside of the sentence structure. Drawing on corpus data for written and spoken German, we show that there are two types of syntactically non-integrated von wegen : (i) illustrating/exemplifying von wegen and, (ii) opposing von wegen . By combining both a formal and a functional perspective, we claim that these two types can be analyzed as modal expres…

  • Fortune and Decay of Lexical Expletives in Germanic and Romance along the Adige River

    Open Access•Alessandra Tomaselli, Ermenegildo Bidese•ARTICLE•Languages•2023•References: 20

Lexical expletives can be divided into two main classes: (i) CP expletives required by the V2 constraint and, hence, by the necessity to lexicalize the position on the left of the inflected verb and (ii) TP expletives connected with the negative value of the pro-drop parameter and, therefore, with the necessity to lexicalize the 'structural' subject position, specifically, [Spec, TP]. The latter can, in turn, be divided into two subclasses: imper…

  • Feature Borrowing in Language Contact

Open Access•Alessandra Tomaselli, Ermenegildo Bidese et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2022•References: 18

In this paper, we consider mood selection in embedded clauses by focusing on a German-based minority language, Cimbrian, which is spoken in a northern Italian enclave. Mood selection in Cimbrian relies on the presence of two different complementizers, az and ke (the latter being borrowed from Romance varieties), each of which selectively require a specific mood. Az selects the mood subjunctive in modal sentences introduced by non-factive verbs, w…

  • Doubly-filled Comps in Alpine varieties: A contrastive study on embedded questions in Germanic and Romance

Oliver Schallert, Ermenegildo Bidese•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2021

Violations of the Doubly-filled COMP filter (DFCs), most notably in the context of embedded questions, can be observed in Germanic, Romance, and even Slavic varieties in the Alpine regions. Using the direct survey technique, we examine DFC-phenomena in several dialects of Southern Bavarian (including language islands) and the adjacent Italian regions (Venetian, Friulian, etc.) in order to check for relevant similarities as well as differences. Wh…

  • Language synchronization north and south of the Brenner Pass: Modeling the continuum

Open Access•Ermenegildo Bidese, Alessandra Tomaselli•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2021

The term Sprachbund refers to the convergence of typologically different languages in the same region and represents an interesting challenge to the notion of parameter conceived as a fixed value of a core syntactic option, i.e. ±null subjects. This contrast could be resolved by the methodological differentiation between surface forms and structural differences. Analyzing the status of clitic subjects and the effects of the so called “that-trace …

  • Deutsches auch und italienisches anche im Vergleich: Gemeinsame Funktion und sprachspezifischer Gebrauch

    Open Access•Manuela Caterina Moroni, Ermenegildo Bidese•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2021

The focus of our contribution is the German particle auch ‘also’ and its Italian counterpart anche. From a semantic point of view, auch and anche convey the same additive meaning in both languages: through them an element, called ‘domain of association’, is added to a list of further elements for which the auch/anche phrase applies. From a syntactical point of view, auch and anche can occupy different positions in the sentence by modifying the ty…

  • Circumventing the 'That-Trace' Effect: Different Strategies between Germanic and Romance

Open Access•Andrea Padovan, Ermenegildo Bidese et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 20

In our paper, we deal with the Germanic-Romance language contact, focusing on Cimbrian, a Germanic minority language spoken in Northern Italy. Specifically, we focus on the violation of the well-known that-trace filter, as it appears to be an interesting case of the superficial convergence that we ascribe to the status of T, which is either too rich (model language) or too weak (replica language) to represent a viable landing site for subject ext…

  • Adjective orders in Cimbrian DPs

Open Access•Ermenegildo Bidese, Andrea Padovan et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2019•References: 3

In this work we aim to give a first description of the morphosyntactic behavior of some adjectives in the Cimbrian of Luserna. This Germanic variety allows a subclass of adjectives to appear in post-nominal position. This aspect seems to be relevant, since neither colloquial Standard German nor any other German substandard variety spoken in German-speaking areas display a similar pattern. Along the lines of Cinque (2010, 2014), we argue that Cimb…

  • Der Geist, der Europa vereint: Nikolaus von Kues’ Denken in der aktuellen europäischen Einheitsund Vielfaltsdebatte

Ermenegildo Bidese, Günther Rautz•ARTICLE•Archiv für Rechts- und…•2013

For the last few years, the European Union has been experiencing a deep and prolonged institutional crisis. This has manifested itself, for instance, in the sovereign debt and Euro crises, the tension between national and transnational sovereignty, and tensions about the rule of law. This manifold crisis has dwarfed the enormous successes of integration and convergence that have been achieved over the past six decades in Europe. Crucially, this c…
