Bes or best? A Quantitative Study into Coronal Stop Deletion in Surinamese Dutch
This article presents the first quantitative study into coronal stop deletion in Surinamese Dutch. It maps the frequency and conditioning of word-final [t]-deletion in the Dutch spoken by 22 Creole women in five speech settings and compares these data to results of previous studies on European Dutch. A multivariate analysis of 7,418 tokens of word-final /t/ preceded by an obstruent indicates that [t]-deletion is a highly frequent phenomenon in Su…
Standard language dynamics in postcolonial Suriname
The sociopragmatic parameters steering the reported selection of Anglicisms or their Dutch alternatives
Researchers studying language variation and change induced by contact with English initially focused on the linguistic integration of English source language (SL) material in the morphophonological structure of the receptor language (RL). Shifting the attention toward the sociopragmatic localization of English lexical material, researchers now foreground both the social identity work conducted with English material and the pragmatic functions of …
Mapping the Structure of Language Repertoires: On the Use of Sociolectometric Methods
In this paper, we will discuss the importance of (socio)lectometric research in attempts to empirically map the range and internal structure of language repertoires, on both the level of the individual and the level of the speech community. Spoken data from 10 East Flemish women (city of Ghent) in 5 speech settings are analysed using 3 multivariate statistical techniques: correspondence regression, multidimensional scaling, and cluster analysis. …
Implicational scales in colloquial Belgian Dutch
In variationist linguistics, the concept of implicational hierarchies, i.e. the idea that feature x implies y but not the reverse, has passed into oblivion the last decades (cf. Rickford 2002: 142). This paper aims at showing the usefulness of implicational scales as an analytical tool, especially when attempting to understand stylistic dynamics and the structure of intermediate variations in dialect/ standard continua. The discussion is based on…
