Early Germanic Languages in Contact
This volume contains revised and, in some cases, extended versions of twelve of the fourteen lectures read at the conference on “Early Germanic Languages in Contact” held at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense on 22-23 August 2013 – with a paper and a review article added at the end on themes pertaining to the aim and scope of the symposium. All papers cover central aspects of the early contact between Germanic and some of its Indo-Europ…
What is West Germanic today
Most work devoted to the delineation and development of West Germanic focuses on its prehistory and early history as a branch of Germanic. The present contribution rather wishes to draw attention to certain characteristic differences between the present-day (High) German, Dutch, (West) Frisian and English standard languages which may appear interesting in view of their presumably common West Germanic origin. The discussion is based on a number of…
Norwegian få ‘get’
The present survey of the uses of the Norwegian verb få ‘get’ is based on its converse relationship to the three-place achievement predicate gi ‘give’, which combines with an agentive subject, a recipient indirect object and a direct object. The syntactic constructions in which få appears and their relative frequency of occurrence are described on the basis of a corpus consisting of 779 examples from works of present-day Norwegian fictional and n…
Germanic Languages and Linguistic Universals
For sale in all countries except Japan. For customers in Japan: please contact Yushodo Co. The Senshu University Project The Development of the Anglo-Saxon Language and Linguistic Universals has as its general aim the investigation of structural characteristics common to the Germanic languages, such as English, German, Norwegian, and Icelandic, all of which are descended from the so-called Proto-Germanic language, and their clarification with reg…
Some Typological Differences between the Modern Germanic Languages in a Historical and Geographical Perspective

Auxiliarverben in Lucien Tesnières Elements de syntaxe struturale

On Ergativity in Modern Norwegian
The present paper deals with the syntactic status of the indefinite NP in Norwegian existential-presentative constructions with a formal subject det in a typological perspective. It is argued that the NP in question is identifiable as a syntactic object both on account of its behaviour and control properties and its coding properties. Moreover, this analysis parallels Itkonen's description of “existential subjects” in Finnish as belonging to an “…
On Extraposition in German and Norwegian. Towards a Contrastive Analysis
In the present article, it is claimed that German, being basically an SOV-language, has a clearly delimitable extrapositional field behind the final verb field of the sentence, whereas Norwegian, which belongs to a VO-type, is in this respect more indeterminate. Two general facts corroborate this assumption. First, extraposition is in German systematically correlated with certain other syntactic phenomena that are either non-existent or play a fa…
Kohärenz und inkohärenz in deutschen infinitfügungen
Om preposisjonens syntaktiske status i de såkalte ≪transitive verbalgrupper≫ i norsk
The present article aims to show that the prepositions in so-called “transitive verb groups” in Norwegian, like, e.g., på and til in passe på and ta hensyn til , respectively, are not to be conflated with the real verb particles in cases like drikke opp etc. The two groups of words have quite distinct semantico syntactic properties. In particular, the NP constituent in cases like drikke opp vinen is subject to the well-known non-specificity condi…
