The verbal expression of events of change in Bulgarian
The paper explores the verbal expression of events of change in Bulgarian, a Slavic language with a uniquely complex verbal system involving triplets of imperfective, perfective and secondary imperfective verbs and aspectual tenses like Aorist and Imperfect. It starts from the observation that English predicates involving events of change generally correspond to Bulgarian triplets of lexically related but aspectually differentiated verbs. It addr…
Pronominal right-dislocation in Norwegian
The goal of the paper is to propose a holistic analysis of the discourse properties and the interpretational effects of pronominal right-dislocation in Norwegian. Previous research has suggested that this is a topic construction, and it has been shown that the right-dislocated pronoun may affect reference assignment, is sometimes used in cases of discourse breaks, is associated with contrastiveness, and may lead to interpretational effects such a…
On the discourse function of particles in post-initial position
Conjunct adverb doch and the notion of contrast
The paper contributes to the ongoing discussion on the relation between information structure and discourse structure. It presents an account of the German conjunct adverb doch (dochCA) that is based on the observation that the interaction between the two structures determines the semantic and pragmatic properties of this conjunct adverb. The account of dochCA presented thus defends a monosemic view on which the semantic and pragmatic properties …
History and grammaticalisation of "doch"/"toch"
The paper investigates the origins of the German/Dutch particle toch/doch) in the hope of shedding light on a puzzle with respect to doch/toch and to shed some light on two theoretical issues. The puzzle is the nearly opposite meaning of the stressed and unstressed versions of the particle which cannot be accounted for in standard theories of the meaning of stress. One theoretical issue concerns the meaning of stress: whether it is possible to re…
