Evidential raising in Mandarin Chinese
In this article, we develop the first syntax-and-semantics analysis of the evidential raising construction of Chinese as in [ Akiu ( haoxiang ) xihuan he pijiu ] de yangzi ‘Akiu seems to like drinking beer’ ( not the DP reading that this string has, too: ‘the appearance of Akiu liking to drink beer’). PF reordering preposes the embedded clausal constituent, which starts out as a sister of yangzi ‘appearance’ and also gets interpreted there. The p…
The relationship between Chinese zhiyou ‘only’ and cai
This short article pursues two goals. First, it critically reviews some results arrived at by Sun (2021), an article that discusses the interplay of Chinese zhiyou ‘only’ with an empty exclusive operator while denying any interesting interaction between zhiyou and the scalar particle cai (against the view defended by Hole, 2004, 2017). Second, it develops a featural account to analyze the morphosyntactic interaction between zhiyou and cai . In su…
Climate change vulnerability assessment of species
Assessing species' vulnerability to climate change is a prerequisite for developing effective strategies to conserve them. The last three decades have seen exponential growth in the number of studies evaluating how, how much, why, when, and where species will be impacted by climate change. We provide an overview of the rapidly developing field of climate change vulnerability assessment (CCVA) and describe key concepts, terms, steps and considerat…

A distributed syntax for evaluative ‘only’ sentences
I claim in this article that several operators in different positions interact to yield the meaning of a nur sentence in German which may receive an evaluative interpretation such as Paul aß nur Kekse ʻPaul only ate cookies (and the speaker considers this little and/or bad)ʼ. The exclusive component of meaning comes from an adverbial particle as in the standard account. For the evaluative component of meaning which is present in many nur sentence…
Dativ, Bindung und Diathese
In its versatilility the German dative is a poorly understood area of grammatical research. This study develops the first unified and explicitly formal theory of the free dative voice in the German language. The central argument is that every free dative functions as an antecedent of a reflexive diathesis. Traditional dative types include the possessive dative, the dativus (in)commode , and the dativus iudicantis .
Linguistics of Vietnamese
The present collection of articles grew out of a workshop on Vietnamese linguistics in 2009 at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. To our knowledge, no workshop with a comparable scope has been held outside of Vietnam for the past 20 years, or even longer. Given the important typological status of Vietnamese as a paradigm case of an isolating language, the volume covers the most relevant fields in linguistics: syntax, semantics, phonology, and …

Focus on identity – the dark side of zìjĭ
This article deals with the syntax and semantics of intensifiers in Mandarin Chinese. Intensifiers are expressions that are functionally and distributionally comparable to non-argumental x-self in English (e.g., the king himself, or do the work oneself). Mandarin examples are zìjĭ, bĕnshēn, qīnzì, or qīinkŏu. The descriptive goal is to identify the paradigm of adnominal and agentive-adverbial intensifiers in Mandarin and to determine the individu…
Datives and Other Cases
This volume provides a state-of-the-art account of research into datives and other morphological cases. The contributors, among them leading scholars in the field, present fresh insights into traditional issues such as the dichotomy between lexical and structural case, and open up fascinating new areas of research. A recurrent feature of the majority of contributions is their combined syntax-semantics perspective. Germanic varieties, Serbian, Alb…
Introduction Operations on argument structure
1. Background This special issue of Linguistics represents the result of a German/ Japanese research project jointly funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences (JSPS). The principal investigators on the German side were Ekkehard König (Free University of Berlin) and Peter Siemund (University of Hamburg, formerly Free University of Berlin). On the Japanese side, the research project was …
Extra argumentality - affectees, landmarks, and voice
This article investigates sentences with additional core arguments of a special type in three languages, viz. German, English, and Mandarin. These additional arguments, called extra arguments in the article, form a crosslinguistically homogeneous class by virtue of their structural and semantic similarities, with so-called “raised possessors” forming just a sub-group among them. Structurally, extra arguments may not be the most deeply embedded ar…
Childhood Iq of Parents Related to Characteristics of Their Offspring
the objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between childhood iq of parents and characteristics of their adult offspring. it was a prospective family cohort study linked to a mental ability survey of the parents and set in renfrew and paisley in scotland. participants were 1921-born men and women who took part in the scottish mental survey in 1932 and the renfrew/paisley study in the 1970s, and whose offspring took part in the …

Childhood IQ, Social Class, Deprivation, and Their Relationships with Mortality and Morbidity Risk in Later Life
OBJECTIVE: To investigate how childhood mental ability (IQ) is related to mortality and morbidity risk, when socioeconomic factors are also considered. METHODS: Participants were from the Midspan studies conducted on adults in the 1970s; 938 Midspan participants were successfully matched with the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 in which children born in 1921 and attending Scottish schools on June 1, 1932, took a cognitive ability test. Mortality, hos…
How quality of life data contribute to our understanding of cancer patients' experiences? A study of patients with lung cancer
Height and risk of death among men and women
OBJECTIVES: Height is inversely associated with cardiovascular disease mortality risk and has shown variable associations with cancer incidence and mortality. The interpretation of findings from previous studies has been constrained by data limitations. Associations between height and specific causes of death were investigated in a large general population cohort of men and women from the West of Scotland. DESIGN: Prospective observational study.…
Adverse socioeconomic conditions in childhood and cause specific adult mortality
Objective: To investigate the association between social circumstances in childhood and mortality from various causes of death in adulthood. Design: Prospective observational study. Setting: 27 workplaces in the west of Scotland. Subjects: 5645 men aged 35–64 years at the time of examination. Main outcome measures: Death from various causes. Results: Men whose fathers had manual occupations when they were children were more likely as adults to ha…

Education and occupational social class
STUDY OBJECTIVES: In the UK, studies of socioeconomic differentials in mortality have generally relied upon occupational social class as the index of socioeconomic position, while in the US, measures based upon education have been widely used. These two measures have different characteristics; for example, social class can change throughout adult life, while education is unlikely to alter after early adulthood. Therefore different interpretations…
Association of cardiovascular disease risk factors with socioeconomic position during childhood and during adulthood
Objective : To investigate strength of associations between risk factors for cardiovascular disease and socioeconomic position during childhood and adulthood. Design : Cross sectional analysis of status of cardiovascular risk factors and past and present social circumstances. Subjects : 5645 male participants in the west of Scotland collaborative study, a workplace screening study. Main outcome measures : Strength of association between each risk…
Problems in the interpretation of small area analysis of epidemiological data
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to examine the extent to which random variation alone will produce differences in observed incidence rates between small areas which will affect measures of spatial clustering and estimates of relative risk. DESIGN--This was a study of changes in the pattern of spatial concentration of cancer incidence over a five year time period. A comparison was made of observed incidence rates for 34 tumour sites with randomly gen…
Cigarette smoking and male lung cancer in an area of very high incidence. I. Report of a case-control study in the West of Scotland
Altogether 656 male lung cancer cases and 1312 age and sex matched controls were interviewed between 1976 and 1981 in a case-control study of cigarette smoking habits and lung cancer in Glasgow and the West of Scotland, an area with the highest recorded incidence in the world. The relative risk of lung cancer increased significantly for smokers whose consumption was below 20 cigarettes per day but did not rise significantly in those who smoked mo…
Cigarette smoking and male lung cancer in an area of very high incidence. II. Report of a general population cohort study in the West of Scotland
A general population cohort of 7055 men aged 45-64 and resident in Renfrew and Paisley, two urban burghs in the West of Scotland, has been followed for 10 1/2 years. Analysis of the cigarette smoking and lung cancer (incidence and mortality) relation has been undertaken in order to establish whether unusual results found in a case-control study of cigarette smoking and lung cancer in the adjacent city of Glasgow could be confirmed. Lung cancer in…
