  • Recent Advances in Technologies for Resource Creation and Mobilization in Language Documentation

    Open Access•Andrea L Berez-Kroeker, Shirley Gabber et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Linguistics•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Language documentation as a subfield of linguistics has arisen over the past roughly two and a half decades more or less simultaneously with the widespread availability of inexpensive hardware and software for creating, storing, and sharing digital objects. Thus, in some ways the history of advancements within the discipline is also a history of how technological tools have been developed, tested, adopted, and eventually abandoned as newer techno…

  • Data transparency and citation in the journal Gesture

Open Access•Lauren Gawne, Chelsea Krajcik et al.•ARTICLE•Gesture•2019•References: 19

Data is central to scholarly research, but the nature and location of data used is often under-reported in research publications. Greater transparency and citation of data have positive effects for the culture of research. This article presents the results of a survey of data citation in six years of articles published in the journal Gesture (12.1–17.2). Gesture researchers draw on a broad range of data types, but the source and location of data …

  • Reproducible research in linguistics

    Open Access•Andrea L Berez-Kroeker, Lauren Gawne et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 17

This paper is a position statement on reproducible research in linguistics, including data citation and attribution, that represents the collective views of some 41 colleagues. Reproducibility can play a key role in increasing verification and accountability in linguistic research, and is a hallmark of social science research that is currently under-represented in our field. We believe that we need to take time as a discipline to clearly articula…

  • Directionals, episodic structure, and geographic information systems

    Andrea L Berez-Kroeker, Andrea L Berez•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2015

Interest in the past decades in the way spatial cognition manifests in language has led to a growing body of literature on the topic. The concurrent development of user-friendly geographic information systems (GIS) software can give linguists new perspectives on spatial language, especially narratives describing geographic landscapes, by allowing the researcher access to those landscapes in a way that was previously only available by visiting the…

  • Prosody as a genre-distinguishing feature in Ahtna

    Andrea L Berez-Kroeker•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2011

This article is a quantitative examination of the function of prosody in distinguishing between the genres of oral performance and expository discourse in Ahtna, an Athabascan language of south-central Alaska. Within the framework of the intonation unit (e.g., Chafe 1987) I examine features of prosody related to both timing (intonation unit length and duration, pause duration and distribution, and syllable pacing) and pitch (pitch reset, boundary…

  • Correlates to Middle Marking in Dena'ina Iterative Verbs

    Andrea L Berez-Kroeker, Andrea L Berez•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2010•Cited by: 3

While recent studies have attempted to find a unified motivation for the Athabaskan middle voice, middle marking in iterative verbs, which are sometimes middles, is generally less well understood than in other middle constructions. Scholars have cited syntactic intransitivity, semantics, or some combination thereof as motivation for when iteratives are marked as middles. In this paper, we present a quantitative analysis of iteratives from traditi…
