Disability Trajectories at the End of Life: A “Countdown” Model
The model reveals a complex pattern of age- and time-dependent heterogeneity in late-life disablement. The techniques developed here could be applied to other phenomena known to depend on TTD, such as cognitive change, weight loss, and health care spending
The Location Decisions of Foreign Investors in China: Untangling the Effect of Wages Using a Control Function Approach
There is almost no support for the proposition that capital is attracted to low wages from firm-level studies. We examine the location choices of 2,884 firms investing in China between 1993 and 1996 to offer two main contributions. First, we find that the location of labor-intensive activities is highly elastic to provincial wage differences. Generally, investors' wage sensitivity declines as the skill intensity of the industry increases. Second,…

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Why Do Real Estate Agents Withhold Available Houses from Black Customers
Potential home buyers may initiate contact with a real estate agent by asking to see a particular advertised house. This paper asks whether an agent's response to such a request depends on the race of the buyer or on whether the house is located in an integrated neighborhood. Like previous research about the causes of housing discrimination, this paper uses data from fair housing audits, a matched-pair technique for comparing the treatment of equ…

Can Home Care Services Achieve Cost Savings in Long-Term Care for Older People
Our findings suggest that the long-sought goal of overall cost-neutrality or even cost-savings through reducing nursing home use sufficiently to more than offset home care costs is technically feasible, but requires tighter targeting of services and a more medically oriented service mix than major home care demonstrations have implemented to date
Care of Children in a Low Fertility Setting: Transitions Between Home and Market Care for Pre-school Children in Germany
Because it may affect a nation's fertility, child care policy is an important policy instrument for low-fertility countries. Designing an effective policy requires an understanding of the determinants of demand for child care. This study uses a descriptive statistical approach to analyze the dynamics of demand for child care for pre-school children in Germany. Age-specific and duration-specific hazard rates for leaving home care and for leaving m…

Reducing Nursing Home use through Community Long-Term Care: An Optimization Analysis
Can community services be made more effective in reducing nursing home use through better management of their mix and allocation? To test this idea, we used data from the National Long-Term Care Channeling Demonstration to estimate logistic regression models relating the use of various types of community services to nursing home use. We then used these estimates to form an objective function for a mathematical optimization procedure which minimiz…
Residential Location, Housing Demand and Labour Supply Decisions of One- and Two-Earner Households: The Case of Bogota, Colombia
This paper is concerned with the simultaneous determination of housing consumption, residential location and the labour supply decisions of one-earner and two-earner households. The model is applied to the city of Bogota, Colombia. It finds that housing consumption and location as well as labour supply decisions vary across gender and household type. The paper suggests that married women who work in the labour market have the burden of a long jou…
The Duration of Post-Injury Absences from Work
The authors use three duration models to estimate the effects of disability benefits on the hazard of returning to work and on the expected duration of work absences. The results show that disincentives exist even when disability benefits are not conditioned on the recipient remaining out of work. In addition, blacks and women are found to be absent longer than white men. Durations of work absences are also influenced by available wages, the type…
A Limiting Joint-Choice Model for Discrete and Continuous Housing Characteristics
A simultaneous discrete and continuous random utility model for housing demand is presented. Household utility depends on three characteristics of hou sing: a discrete number of bedrooms and continuous measures of hous-i ng quality and distance to the central business district. Empirical r esults for a sample of renter households from San Francisco are compa red for a univariate structure in which each choice variable has its own utility or disut…
