Deciding what and how to share Indigenous knowledge online
We are Indigenous knowledge holders, herbalists, academics, and community environmental health staff who have the honor and responsibility of curating and sharing knowledge about traditional plants and medicines. Together, we created the Native Plants and Foods Curriculum Portal. This online sharing platform increases accessibility to Indigenous knowledge that is vital to the wellbeing of our environment and all those within it. In this article, …
Investigation of Influences on Indoor and Outdoor SVOC Exposure
Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, with more than 66% of that time spent in residential buildings. Factors pertaining to household behavior or environmental factors may influence types of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) found indoors. Paired indoor and outdoor passive samplers were deployed at twenty-four locations across the United States. Samples were analyzed for >1500 SVOCs to identify common patterns in exposure …
Wildfire Smoke Exposure During Pregnancy
Relative to other Oregon counties, Klamath County experiences worse air quality due to wildfire smoke, as well as elevated rates of infant mortality and low birthweight. Klamath County Public Health (KCPH) raised concerns that wildfire smoke is a contributor to poor infant health. Thus, we built a multidisciplinary team and designed a community-engaged research (CEnR) project to capture community and individual-level exposure to wildfire smoke co…
Integrating participant feedback and concerns to improve community and individual level chemical exposure assessment reports
The report-back of research results (RBRR) for community and individual level exposure assessment data should keep the following key principles in mind: materials should be accessible (language level, data visualization options, graph literacy), identify known information vs unknown (e.g., provide context for what exposure assessment data means, acknowledge lack of current health standards or guidelines), recognize and respect community knowledge…
Associating Increased Chemical Exposure to Hurricane Harvey in a Longitudinal Panel Using Silicone Wristbands
Hurricane Harvey was associated with flood-related damage to chemical plants and oil refineries, and the flooding of hazardous waste sites, including 13 Superfund sites. As clean-up efforts began, concerns were raised regarding the human health impact of possible increased chemical exposure resulting from the hurricane and subsequent flooding. Personal sampling devices in the form of silicone wristbands were deployed to a longitudinal panel of in…
Developing a Short Assessment of Environmental Health Literacy (SA-EHL)
Environmental health literacy (EHL) is defined as the understanding of how the environment can impact human health, yet there are few tools to quantify EHL. We adapted the Short Assessment of Health Literacy (SAHL) to create the Short Assessment of Environmental Health Literacy (SA-EHL). Using the Amazon mTurk platform, users ( n = 864) completed the 18-item SAHL and the 17-item SA-EHL. The SA-EHL was originally tested with 30 items; 13 items wer…
Development and Validation of an Environmental Health Literacy Assessment Screening Tool for Domestic Well Owners
In the U.S., privately owned wells are not subject to any regulatory testing requirements. Well owners must have sufficient environmental health literacy (EHL) to understand and interpret information that contain complex terms and labels to manage their water quality. The objective of this paper is to assess the performance and validity of a new EHL screening tool. The Water Environmental Literacy Level Scale (WELLS) is based on the Newest Vital …
Development of an environmental health tool linking chemical exposures, physical location and lung function
The ELF is a novel environmental health assessment tool that allows for personal data collection spanning chemical exposures, location and lung function measures as well as self-reported information
Communicating Results of a Dietary Exposure Study Following Consumption of Traditionally Smoked Salmon
One expectation of community-based participatory research (CBPR) is participant access to study results. However, reporting experimental data produced by studies involving biological measurements in the absence of clinical relevance can be challenging to scientists and participants. We applied best practices in data sharing to report the results of a study designed to explore polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons absorption, metabolism, and excretion …
A Community-Based Approach to Developing a Mobile Device for Measuring Ambient Air Exposure, Location, and Respiratory Health
In west Eugene (Oregon), community research indicates residents are disproportionately exposed to industrial air pollution and exhibit increased asthma incidence. In Carroll County (Ohio), recent increases in unconventional natural gas drilling sparked air quality concerns. These community concerns led to the development of a prototype mobile device to measure personal chemical exposure, location, and respiratory function. Working directly with t…
