  • Ambivalent Inquiry

    David Eaton•CHAPTER•Postcolonial Disorders•2008

This chapter examines the AIDS epidemic and the concomitant political and financial crises in the Republic of Congo. It describes the postcolonial, postsocialist Republic of Congo prior to the 1997 civil war, where borderland was as much metaphoric and situational as geographic and postcolonial, and where the treatment of AIDS patients was virtually impossible. The chapter discusses local ways of managing and curtailing speech about and knowledge…

  • Diagnosing the Crisis in the Republic of Congo

    Open Access•David Eaton, David W Eaton•ARTICLE•Africa•2006•Cited by: 14•References: 50

In 1991 in the Republic of Congo, a sovereign national conference in Brazzaville inaugurated a peaceful transition from socialist one-party government to multi-party democracy. The pluralization of public voices in the newly liberalized country - in religious movements, political parties and independent presses - expressed new conditions of understanding about the nation and its affairs. At the same time, local networks and categories of percepti…

  • Incorporating the Other: Val Plumwood's Integration of Ethical Frameworks

    David Eaton•ARTICLE•Ethics & the Environment•2002

Val Plumwood's recent attempt to formulate a "contextual" theory of vegetarianism that integrates concern for animals, ecology, and unprivileged societies involves heavy criticism of Carol J. Adams. Plumwood's theory, although claiming to be "contextual," involves an unnecessary degree of abstraction both in its engagement with Adams's thought and in its attempt to formulate a universal narrative. Plumwood consistently misrepresents Adams's work …

  • A Brazzaville Friendship

    Open Access•David Eaton•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2000

This article tells a story of a friendship between an American ethnographer and a young man of Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of Congo, at a time of economic crisis and factional warfare. Over time, our mutual misreadings of our relationship led to conflict, undermining the shifting narratives through which we understood and represented our actions. Feelings and gestures of good will, generosity and loyalty were made ambiguous in light of a…
