  • Pinochet’s monument

Open Access•Macarena Carolina Ibarra Alonso, Macarena Ibarra et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Heritage…•2026•References: 3

Even though we recognise that all heritage carries inherent complexities, this article draws on the concept of ‘difficult heritage’ to examine the case of the Altar of the Fatherland. This monumental complex was created in the early years of the Chilean dictatorship (1973–1990) to commemorate the coup d’état of 11 September 1973 and to underscore the parallels between Augusto Pinochet and Bernardo O’Higgins, the hero of Chile’s independence proce…

  • Memorialicidio

Open Access•Manuela Badilla Rajevic, Valentina Infante Batiste et al.•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2026•References: 30

This article analyzes the recent wave of attacks targeting sites of remembrance of human rights violations in Chile. This phenomenon is conceptualized as Memorialicidio , that is to say, destructive actions that seek to cause damage to those commemo…

  • Pro-dictatorship memorialization in democratic Chile (1990–2020)

    Open Access•Valentina Infante Batiste•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 14

The article examines the combinations of conditions that explain the maintenance of pro-dictatorship memorialization in democratic Chile, where various pro-dictatorship memory sites, memorials, squares, and street names still positively commemorate the military dictatorship or associated elements (1973–1990). The study used four main explanatory factors and subjected them to a Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The procedure revealed that, in Chil…
