Making it up
In this article, a transdisciplinary cultural labour perspective is used to examine the evolving and spontaneous networks and grassroots collective movements of performing arts freelancers in two contexts: Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Athens (Greece) in response to the outbreak of COVID-19. With a principally methodological contribution, the article proposes that evolving cultural ecologies research should mirror the ecologies it studies by ado…
Podcast | Music Work and Solidarity Politics in the Age of Covid-19
Professional musicians in Athens are a community notoriously lacking in solidarity and collective campaigning. Even during the so-called ‘Greek Crisis’, that exacerbated circumstances of precarity among performing artists, musicians seemed reluctant to resort to collective struggle and unionisation. However, the wake of the pandemic that resulted in the closure of music venues and cancellation of all face-to-face musical activity overnight had an…
Musical careers in constant crises

This article unfolds as a dialogue between two academics and two musicians from Greece and Iran, touching on issues of precarity, creativity, capitalism, state support and control, and radical ideas for a post-Covid cultural economy. Refle…

The selected readings (Small 1977; Blacking 1973) demonstrated the central, if complex, role of musicality in the human condition. The idea that ‘quality’ in music was culture specifi c, however, was diffi cult for me to grasp. It wasn’t so much the superiority of ‘classical…
Jazz in Athens
This paper presents an ethnographic account of jazz music in Athens. The small scene under scrutiny is mainly populated by professional session instrumentalists of the Greek popular music scene who perform jazz as a side activity for their own pleasure. In the process, they construct a conceptual dichotomy between 'work' and 'play'. Drawing on the author's extended involvement in this scene, and focusing on private interviews with musicians, this…
