  • The Clash of Irrationalities in Sophocles’ Antigone

    Open Access•Patrick Mahony, Patrick J Mahony•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•2009•References: 8

A study of the Greek text of Sophocles' Antigone provides a deeper understanding of the identities and psychodynamic interaction between the play's two main characters. Creon's particular diction, imagery, and even syntax constitute a subtext reflecting his rigidly hierarchical attitude and paranoid fear that defensively overlie his castration anxiety, his persecutory conception of women, and his own body image. His mental collapse is precipitate…

  • Aspects of Nonperverse Scopophilia Within an Analysis

    Open Access•Patrick Mahony, Patrick J Mahony•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This essay is intended to contribute to the increasing importance ascribed to scopophilia in modern psychoanalytic literature. The exceptional position of scopophilia is twofold: by virtue of its subdivisions, voyeurism and exhibitionism, it constitutes one of the two pairs of component drives recognized by Freud; and it informs one of the two major perceptual avenues that comprise communication in the analytic setting. A case is presented which …

  • Further Reflections On Freud And His Writing

    Open Access•Patrick Mahony, Patrick J Mahony•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1984•Cited by: 8•References: 6

As we broaden our frames of reference, Freud's genius looms larger. An adequate appreciation of Freud accordingly necessitates an examination of how he read and wrote and how Strachey translated him. Despite the enormous amount of psychoanalytic commentary, the subject of his writing qua writing still remains untapped to a considerable extent. By deepening our awareness of the nuances and implications of the manner in which Freud wrote, we corres…
