  • Agents of Repair

    Open Access•Gideon Reuveni•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2026

This article explores the underappreciated roles of the International Tracing Service and the United Restitution Organization as vital bureaucratic and legal agents of postwar restitution. Initially focused on humanitarian tracing activities, the International Tracing Service gradually transformed into a central archival and administrative authority within the complex reparations landscape. Concurrently, the United Restitution Organization emerge…

  • Individual Reparations Claims and Holocaust Research

    Open Access•Gideon Reuveni•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2023

The stacks of materials and amount of information collected as part of the individual reparation process since the late 1940s are immense. It is the largest untapped Holocaust-related archive. One might ask, what should we do with this enormous collection of documents? Will these documents provide new insights on the Holocaust? How will they change what we know about post-war societies? This is of course not the first time that such questions hav…

  • The Great Jewish Transformation

    Gideon Reuveni•ARTICLE•Jewish Culture and History•2022

This article seeks to offer a bird’s-eye overview of the ways in which the marketplace was imagined and experienced by Jews from the pre-emancipation to the post-Holocaust periods. It highlights dramatic transformations of the marketplace from a progressive site of promise, to a place of exclusion and persecution, into a site of healing and rehabilitation after the Holocaust. Studying these changes in the context of the Jewish expirence provides …

  • Neither insiders nor outsiders

    Gideon Reuveni•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•2022

The Deutsche Bücherei was founded on the eve of the First World War as the German National Library. Its history very much reflects Germany's 'special path' in the twentieth century. This exploration of how the Deutsche Bücherei related to Jews aims to contribute to ongoing efforts to better understand the nature and scope of anti-Jewish sentiment in Germany during the period until National Socialism assumed power. Two main questions are central t…

  • The Future of the German-Jewish Past

Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin•EDITOR•BOOK•Future of the German-Jewish Past•2020

Germany‚Äôs acceptance of its direct responsibility for the Holocaust has strengthened its relationship with Israel and has led to a deep commitment to combat antisemitism and rebuild Jewish life in Germany. As we draw close to a time when there will be no more firsthand experience of the horrors of the Holocaust, there is great concern about what will happen when German responsibility turns into history. Will the present taboo against open antis…

  • Cornelia Aust. The Jewish Economic Elite

    Open Access•Gideon Reuveni•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

Cornelia Aust’s The Jewish Economic Elite: Making Modern Europe addresses two sets of questions. The first deals with the place of Jews within the changing economic and political settings of European societies during the period Reinhart Koselleck called the Sattelzeit (saddle-time), or the transitional period into political modernity roughly spanning between 1750 and 1850. The second explores the mechanisms of setting up and upholding commercial …

  • Consumer Culture and the Making of Modern Jewish Identity

    Open Access•Gideon Reuveni•BOOK•Consumer Culture and the Making…•2017

Antisemitic stereotypes of Jews as capitalists have hindered research into the economic dimension of the Jewish past. The figure of the Jew as trader and financier dominated the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But the economy has been central to Jewish life and the Jewish image in the world; Jews not only made money but spent money. This book is the first to investigate the intersection between consumption, identity, and Jewish history in Eur…

  • Sarah L. Leonard. Fragile Minds and Vulnerable Souls

    Gideon Reuveni•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2017

Sarah L. Leonard’s Fragile Minds and Vulnerable Souls: The Matter of Obscenity in Nineteenth-Century Germany is an enticing exploration of obscenity as a category of print in the short nineteenth century in Germany. The book focuses on so-called “immoral and obscene texts” in a period in which a growing number of people were able to read and printed material became obtainable for larger audiences (4). Yet Leonard is not so much interested in the …

  • Longing, Belonging, and the Making of Jewish Consumer Culture

Gidʿon Reʾuveni, Gideon Reuveni et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Longing, belonging, and the…•2010

Jewish history has been extensively studied from social, political, religious, and intellectual perspectives, but the history of Jewish consumption and leisure has largely been ignored. The hitherto neglect of scholarship on Jewish consumer culture arises from the tendency within Jewish studies to chronicle the production of high culture and entrepreneurship. Yet consumerism played a central role in Jewish life. This volume is the first of its ki…

  • Everyday life in Nazi Germany

Andrew Stuart Bergerson, Elissa Mailänder et al.•ARTICLE•German History•2009

At a conference in 2007 in his honour at the University of Michigan, Alf Lüdtke commented that there are many different ways to research the history of everyday life: its practitioners are still more united by the questions they ask than by how they seek their answers. Its pluralism, and its marginality, has allowed Alltagsgeschichte to serve as a conduit for epistemological innovation into modern German history from other fields, such as the lin…

    Gideon Reuveni•ARTICLE•Social History•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, with the founding of the German nation-state, the removal of various restrictions on the distribution of newspapers, a decrease in the price of paper and an improvement in printing techniques, lighting and means of communication opened the way in Germany for the mass distribution of reading material, in general, and newspapers in particular. In those years a closely-knit network of distribution of newspa…
