  • What has the ‘first sexual revolution’ to do with kinship transition? ‘Kin marriages’ and illicit sexuality in nineteenth-century Alpine Switzerland

    Sandro Guzzi-Heeb•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2018•References: 3

This paper questions the link between two major transformations observed in eighteenth century Europe: the reorganization of kinship structures and kinship solidarities on the one hand and the so-called ‘sexual revolution’ of the eighteenth century on the other, i.e. the spectacular rise of illegitimacy throughout Europe. Raising the question of this link has far-reaching theoretical implications, since the fundamental changes in kinship and sexu…

  • Egodocuments, biographie et microhistoire en perspective. Une histoire d’amour

    Sandro Guzzi-Heeb•ARTICLE•Études de lettres•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 19

  • Kinship Transition and Political Polarization

    Sandro Guzzi-Heeb•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2016•References: 3

Detailed analysis shows that cultural change did not emerge as a general and unilateral revolutionary process in the Swiss Alps, as many studies have suggested, but as strains within certain political, religious, social, or sexual milieus. What occurred was a growing diversification of social groups rather than a global transformation. Marriages between relatives became, especially in the nineteenth century, special relationships within these mil…

    Open Access•Sandro Guzzi-Heeb•BOOK•Passions alpines•2014

  • Sex, Politics, and Social Change in the Eighteenth and the Nineteenth Centuries

    Open Access•Sandro Guzzi-Heeb•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2011•Cited by: 1

The eighteenth-century “sexual revolution” cannot simply be explained as a consequence of economic or institutional factors—industrialization, agricultural revolution, secularization, or legal hindrances to marriages. The example of western Valais (Switzerland) shows that we have to deal with a complex configuration of factors. The micro-historical approach reveals that in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sexuality—and above all illicit sex…

This paper deals with the political and social conflicts in 18th century Val de Bagnes. The existence of a large genealogical database of its population provides new insights into the mobilization patterns of an early modern rural area. Our prosopographical approach, which attempts to identify the protagonists of the different conflicts, reveals the existence of well-organized and relatively stable political factions. Rather than simply being sha…

  • Kinship, ritual kinship and political milieus in an alpine Valley in 19th century

Sandro Guzzi-Heeb•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2009•Cited by: 3

In my paper I will present some results about ritual kinship and political mobilization of popular groups in an alpine Valley: the Val de Bagnes, in the Swiss canton of Valais. There are two major reasons to choose the Val de Bagnes for our inquiry about social networks: the existence of sharp political and social conflicts during the 18th and the 19th century and the availability of almost systematic genealogical data between 1700 and 1900. The …
