Politics and Practices of visual propaganda in Portuguese Estado Novo. An Introduction
Mass print media, such as newspapers and illustrated magazines, created mass audiences at the beginning of the twentieth century, offering fertile ground for governments wishing to mobilise entire societies for war or to disseminate information or propaganda to large groups of people in relatively short spaces of time. In the 1920s and 1930s, these printed means were joined, for political propaganda purposes, by cinema, photography and radio, whi…
Between an Empty Camera and Bare White Feet
Amplified by a feedback loop of nationalist memorialization and international reception, the dominant narrative on Ricardo Rangel’s work reduces the anti-colonial purchase of his images to a simple disclosure of binarized injustice. By reading lesser-known images alongside his more canonical production, I argue that his wider archive in fact shows a gradated engagement with the racial complexities of late-colonial Mozambique and provides a key so…

Photobook of the City
In this article, I examine the representation that Eduardo Gageiro's Lisboa no cais da memória makes of Salazarist Lisbon in the post-war period up until the Carnation Revolution. I look at how the work's anchorage and its obvious generic affiliation as humanistic street photography set up a particular reading of the work for the reader. I then consider how the text's photobook format works to convey the sorts of meanings associated with this typ…
E eu, que não conhecia nada
Catarina Mourão's A Dama de Chandor gently depicts the life of one of Goa's last Lusophone aristocrats, Aida de Menezes Bragança, and shows her struggle to maintain her home and way of life as globalisation and the integration of Goa into India's mainstream sweep it away. Using the documentary typology developed by John Corner, I argue that A Dama de Chandor is structured so as to make the viewer identify with Aida and her struggle. There follows…
Out into Uncertainty
Small Bursts of Sharp Laughter
Jacob e Dulce by Francisco João da Costa (better known by his pen name, Gip) was first published in book form in 1896 after serialization in the Goan newspaper O Ultramar. A stinging depiction of an arranged marriage between members of the native Catholic elite, the work achieved great success with the readers of its day, caused no little scandal amongst the same, and has passed into history as perhaps the most popular and influential work in Por…
