  • Role of Temperament, Parenting Behaviors, and Stress on Turkish Preschoolers’ Internalizing Symptoms

Open Access•H Melis Yavuz, Bilge Selçuk et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2016•References: 8

Child‐ and family‐related factors that predict internalizing symptoms are understudied in preschool years and have a negative influence on children's functioning. We examined observational assessments of preschoolers' temperamental fearfulness and exuberance, mother reports of negative control, warmth, and parenting stress in a sample of 109 Turkish preschoolers. High temperamental fearfulness and low joyful/exuberant positive affectivity in addi…

  • Self‐conscious Shyness

    Open Access•Natalie D Eggum, Natalie D Eggum‐Wilkens et al.•ARTICLE•Infancy•2015

Fearful and self‐conscious subtypes of shyness have received little attention in the empirical literature. Study aims included the following: (1) determining whether fearful shyness predicted self‐conscious shyness, (2) describing development of self‐conscious shyness, and (3) examining genetic and environmental contributions to fearful and self‐conscious shyness. Observed self‐conscious shyness was examined at 19, 22, 25, and 28 months in same‐s…

  • Profiles of observed infant anger predict preschool behavior problems

    Rebecca J Brooker, Kimberly A Bu et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Using both traditional composites and novel profiles of anger, we examined associations between infant anger and preschool behavior problems in a large, longitudinal data set (N = 966). We also tested the role of life stress as a moderator of the link between early anger and the development of behavior problems. Although traditional measures of anger were largely unrelated to later behavior problems, profiles of anger that dissociated typical fro…

  • Socialization of Turkish Children's Emotions

Open Access•Feyza Corapci, Nazan Aksan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Studies of Childhood•2012•References: 10

This study addressed mothers' specific responses to children's expressions of sadness and anger. The first goal was to determine whether children's sadness and anger expressions elicited different maternal responses. The role of maternal education and child gender was also examined in sadness and anger socialization. Finally, the relations of sadness and anger socialization responses to children's adjustment were examined and the moderating role …

  • Parental Personality as an Inner Resource That Moderates the Impact of Ecological Adversity on Parenting

Grazyna Kochanska, Nazan Aksan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Parents' personality was examined as a moderator of the impact of demographic risk on parenting in a longitudinal study (N=102 families). Parents' personality and demographic risk (i.e., education level, age, family income, and family size) were assessed when children were infants, and parents' power assertion, warmth, and positive affect were observed in naturalistic interactions 2.5 years later. Parents' personality moderated the adverse impact…

  • Early positive emotionality as a heterogenous trait

Grazyna Kochanska, Nazan Aksan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2007•Cited by: 6

Young children's positive affect in scripted laboratory procedures and in free-flowing social interactions may reflect the activation of related but distinct aspects of positive emotionality (PE), with different implications for self-regulation. The authors observed children's PE in scripted laboratory procedures and in naturalistic interactions with mothers in 2 studies: at 9, 14, 22, 33, and 45 months (the Parent-Child Study, N=112) and at 7, 1…

  • Children's fearfulness as a moderator of parenting in early socialization

Grazyna Kochanska, Nazan Aksan et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2007•Cited by: 26•References: 14

Findings from 2 longitudinal studies replicate and considerably extend past work on child temperament as a moderating link between parenting and successful socialization outcomes. In Study 1 (N = 106 mothers and children), child fearfulness, mother-child positive relationship, and maternal power assertion were assessed at 22 and 33 months; the outcome--children's moral self--was assessed at 56 months. In Study 2 (N = 102 mothers, fathers, and chi…

  • Children's Conscience and Self‐Regulation

    Open Access•Grazyna Kochanska, Nazan Aksan•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2006

We focus on children's conscience, an inner guiding system responsible for the gradual emergence and maintenance of self‐regulation. Drawing from our research program that has encompassed three large longitudinal studies cumulatively covering the first 6 years of life, we discuss two major components of conscience: moral emotions (guilt, discomfort following transgressions) and moral conduct compatible with rules and standards. We discuss the org…

  • Mutually responsive orientation between parents and their young children

Nazan Aksan, Grazyna Kochanska et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2006•Cited by: 15•References: 50

The authors captured mother-child and father-child relationships when children were 7 and 15 months old by coding 4 explicitly dyadic components of mutually responsive orientation (MRO): coordinated routines, harmonious communication, mutual cooperation, and emotional ambiance. These components were coded in 102 families in naturalistic contexts at home and in the laboratory. Using confirmatory factor analytic methods, the authors demonstrated th…

  • Conscience in Childhood

    Nazan Aksan, Grazyna Kochanska•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2005•Cited by: 8•References: 49

Although conscience has been the focus of reflection for centuries, fundamental questions regarding its organization have not been fully answered. To address those questions, the authors applied structural equation modeling techniques to longitudinal data comprising multiple behavioral measures of children's conscience, obtained in parallel fashion at 33 and 45 months. The measures encompassed moral emotion (guilt and empathic distress) and rule-…

  • Temperament, Relationships, and Young Children's Receptive Cooperation With Their Parents

Grazyna Kochanska, Nazan Aksan et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2005•Cited by: 14•References: 46

The authors studied receptive cooperation--a willing, eager stance toward parents--in 15-month-old children (N = 101) in broadly ranging contexts. Children's anger proneness and parents' responsiveness (both observed at 7 months) and children's attachment security (assessed in Strange Situation at 15 months) were examined as predictors of children's receptive cooperation at 15 months. In mother-child dyads, secure attachment was strongly associat…

  • Heterogeneity of Joy in Infancy

    Open Access•Nazan Aksan, Grazyna Kochanska•ARTICLE•Infancy•2004

We examined 7‐month‐old infants' responses to 6 joy‐eliciting episodes. Three episodes included and 3 did not include a major social‐interactive component. Confirmatory factor analysis of infants' joy reactions in these episodes revealed that a 2‐factor model significantly improved the fit over a single‐factor solution. Those 2 factors represented infants' social versus nonsocial joy reactions. Different correlates of those factors supported thei…

  • Maternal Power Assertion in Discipline and Moral Discourse Contexts

Grazyna Kochanska, Nazan Aksan et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2003•Cited by: 8•References: 66

Parental power assertion is traditionally studied in the behavioral domain--discipline triggered by the child's immediate misbehavior--but rarely in the cognitive domain--parent-child discussions of the child's past misbehavior. Maternal power assertion was observed in "do" and 'don't" discipline contexts from 14 to 45 months and in the context of mother-child discourse about a recent misbehavior at 56 months. Mothers' use of power cohered across…

  • Derivation and prediction of temperamental types among preschoolers

    Nazan Aksan, H Hill Goldsmith et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1999•Cited by: 6•References: 5

The number and nature of temperamental types in 488 children aged 3 years 6 months was examined on the basis of a broad set of temperamental characteristics, including positive and negative emotionality and the attentional and behavioral control domains. Configural frequency analysis methods showed clear support for two temperament types: controlled-nonexpressive and noncontrolled-expressive. These types showed meaningful differences against exte…
