Change in Loneliness Experienced by Older Men and Women Living Alone and With Others at the Onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic
Building on theory suggesting that loneliness is distinct from living arrangements, social isolation, and perceived social support, we examined change in loneliness for older people at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Analyzing 14-years of data with multilevel mixed-effects models, we found higher levels of loneliness among people living alone, people more socially isolated, and people with less perceived support. Gender affected changes in lo…
The Prospective Association of Personality Traits and Successful Aging
We used data ( N = 928) from ORANJ BOWL, a six-wave panel of adults (aged 50–74 at baseline) to address the association between personality and successful aging at two points in time, 8 years apart. Regressions examined the associations between Wave 2 neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness and Wave 3 subjective success, functional ability, pain, and chronic conditions. Models tested personality traits independen…
Sars-CoV-2 Vaccine Hesitancy in a Sample of US Adults: Role of Perceived Satisfaction With Health, Access to Healthcare, and Attention to Covid-19 News
Understanding which communities are most likely to be vaccine hesitant is necessary to increase vaccination rates to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2. This cross-sectional survey of adults ( n = 501) from three cities in the United States (Miami, FL, New York City, NY, San Francisco, CA) assessed the role of satisfaction with health and healthcare access and consumption of COVID-19 news, previously un-studied variables related to vaccine hesitanc…
Impact of Upper and Lower Body Functional Ability on Affect in Older Couples
Objective: We explore how upper and lower body functional ability of older adults and their partners relate to affect in later life. Methods: Data regarding own and partner's upper and lower body functional abilities were reported by 1767 married/partnered persons aged 57-83. Using multilevel modeling to account for nesting within couples, we examined the impact of a respondent's own functional abilities, their perception of their partner's abili…

Effects of peri-traumatic stress experienced during Hurricane Sandy on functional limitation trajectories for older men and women
Trajectories of Depressive Symptoms Experienced by Older People: Effects of Time, Hurricane Sandy, and the Great Recession
Depressive symptoms increased as a function of the Great Recession, but exposure to Hurricane Sandy was not associated with subsequent increases in depressive symptoms for any of the 4 groups. People who consistently experienced high levels of depressive symptoms over time reported the highest levels of peri-traumatic stress during Hurricane Sandy. Findings highlight the importance of accounting for historical trends when studying the effects of …
Long-term effects of disaster on depressive symptoms: Type of exposure matters
Successful Aging, Social Support, and Ownership of a Companion Animal
Studies consistently find that higher levels of social support improve the psychological and physiological health of older people, but findings from empirical research are mixed regarding the presence of a "pet effect"— the idea that living with an animal can improve human health, psychological wellbeing, and longevity. We examined the assocations among social support, dog and cat ownership, and successful aging in a panel of 5,688 people between…
Oral health-related quality of life in youth receiving cleft-related surgery: Self-report and proxy ratings
Modeling Successful Aging Over Time in the Context of a Disaster
Findings have important implications for expanding our conceptualization of SA, clarifying the measures used to understand SA, and the importance of accounting for the effects of disasters on SA
A Longitudinal Examination of the Effects of Early Influences and Midlife Characteristics on Successful Aging
Findings suggest that successful aging is a fluid construct and that although some characteristics identifiable early in life predict successful aging, others are dampened by midlife statuses
Examination of a Theoretical Model for Oral Health–Related Quality of Life Among Youths With Cleft
Objectives. We evaluated relationships among physical and psychological indicators and oral health–related quality of life (OHRQOL) in youths with cleft. Methods. We recruited youths aged 7 to 18 years with cleft palate (n = 282) or cleft lip and palate (n = 918) and their caregivers into a 5-year observational investigation at 6 US treatment centers from 2009 to 2011. At baseline, youths completed surveys to assess psychological status. After cl…
Neighborhood Food Environment and Obesity in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Individual and Neighborhood Effects
Objectives. We tested hypotheses about the relationship between neighborhood-level food sources and obesity, controlling for individual-level characteristics. Methods. Data (collected November 2006–April 2008) derived from a random-digit-dial sample of 5688 community-dwelling adults aged 50 to 74 years residing in 1644 census tracts in New Jersey. Using multilevel structural equation models, we created latent constructs representing density of fa…
Evaluation of the similarities and differences in response patterns to the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory and the Child Oral Health Impact Scores among youth with cleft
Effects of neighborhood violence and perceptions of neighborhood safety on depressive symptoms of older adults
Adherence to Clusters of Health Behaviors and Successful Aging
Although adherence to more health behaviors was associated with a greater likelihood of successful aging, it is possible to age successfully by adhering to specific clusters of health behaviors
Health Disparities Among Children With Cleft
Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a multidimensional construct that measures well-being associated with the teeth, mouth, and face. This cross-sectional study examined OHRQoL, demographic data, and clinical indicators in 839 treatment-seeking youths with cleft from 6 geographically diverse cleft treatment centers. Individuals without health insurance and representing ethnic minorities had lower OHRQoL scores on the Child Oral Health…
Neighborhood characteristics and depressive symptoms of older people: Local spatial analyses
Balancing Caregiving and Work: Role Conflict and Role Strain Dynamics
Positing role conflict as a bidirectional construct in which work interferes with caregiving (WIC) and caregiving interferes with work (CIW), this study investigated its antecedents (demands and support of caregiving and work) and consequences (role strain). A national sample of 583 women between the ages of 50 and 64 years identified using random-digit-dial procedures completed a telephone survey. Structural equation modeling revealed that careg…
The Texture of Neighborhoods and Disability Among Older Adults
The use of multiple indicators of neighborhood with good psychometric qualities is critical for advancing knowledge about the mechanisms by which neighborhood characteristics are associated with the health of older people
Successful Aging: Early Influences and Contemporary Characteristics
PURPOSE: positing that successful aging has independent, yet related, dimensions that are both objective and subjective, we examine how early influences and contemporary characteristics define 4 groups of people. DESIGN AND METHODS: data were gathered from 5,688 persons aged 50-74 years living in New Jersey who participated in telephone interviews. Latent profile analysis defined people who age successfully according to both objective and subject…
A Two-Factor Model of Successful Aging
Results add rigor to the measurement of a construct that has intrigued philosophers and scientists for hundreds of years, providing the empirical foundation on which to build research about successful aging
Self-Rated Health and Depressive Symptoms in Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease and Their Spouses: A Longitudinal Dyadic Analysis of Late-Life Marriages
Limited research has examined the ways in which changes in self-rated health experienced by aging spouses affect depressive symptoms of both members of the dyad. Longitudinal data from 315 older couples in which one partner had end-stage renal disease were analyzed using multilevel modeling. Results indicate that for both patients and spouses, own mean self-rated health was associated with own depressive symptoms, and change in self-rated health …
Stability and Change in Patient Preferences and Spouse Substituted Judgments Regarding Dialysis Continuation
There is a great deal more stability than change in patient preferences and substituted judgments regarding continuation of dialysis over the course of 1 year. This suggests that if patients have previously expressed preferences it is possible for this to maintain their voice in end-of-life decisions when the patients themselves are unable to express their wishes
