  • How Right Was Kripke About Biological Kind Terms

Open Access•Michael Devitt, Ben Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Theoria•2026

Devitt and Porter tested the hypothesis that a biological term referring to a taxon of scientific but little practical interest, ‘Rio de Janeiro Myrtle’, would be covered by a Causal‐Historical Theory of reference, as Saul Kripke suggested, but that one referring to a kind of significant practical interest, ‘rice’, would not. ‘Rice’ would be covered by a Hybrid Theory, part‐causal, part‐descriptive, and so Kripke would be only half‐right about ‘r…

  • Reference borrowing: The case of implement terms

    Open Access•Michael Devitt, Ben Porter•ARTICLE•Mind & Language•2025

The article reports experiments testing the theory of reference for implement terms, using “fax machine” and “abacus” as examples. We found strong evidence against the description theory that the reference of these terms is determined by the descriptions that participants associate with them. This supports the causal theory of reference borrowing for these terms. We emphasize that our findings do not support a causal theory of the initial referen…

  • Risk Factors for Homelessness Among Post-9/11 Era Veterans

    Open Access•Stephen Metraux, Claire A Kolaja et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2025•References: 52

This study examined the associations between a broad range of individual characteristics and homelessness among 49,323 post-9/11 era Veterans. Questions concerning the roles of premilitary, military and post military factors in Veteran’s vulnerability to homelessness have persisted despite the considerable attention given to Veteran homelessness, and has highlighted the absence of longitudinal studies that could contribute to the empirical unders…

  • A structural equation modeling approach to leveraging the power of extant sentiment analysis tools

Open Access•Viswadeep Lebakula, Ben Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Computational Social…•2025•References: 33

Machine-derived sentiment analysis has become a pervasive and useful tool to address a wide array of issues in natural language processing. Leading technology companies such as Google now provide sentiment analysis tools (SATs) as readily accessible online products. Academic researchers develop and make available SATs to support the research enterprise. One of the major challenges with SATs is the inconsistencies in results among the various SATs…

    Open Access•Matthew C Dean, Ben Porter•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 38

The current study sought to identify the sentiment of Russian-language social media posts about the war in Ukraine and to contrast sentiment between two popular social media platforms in Russia: VK and Telegram. Overall, 1,393,245 posts were gathered from social media platforms from February 2022 to September 2022 using keywords associated with the conflict. Using the sentiment analysis program Valence Aware Dictionary for sEntiment Reasoning (VA…

  • Two sorts of biological kind terms: The cases of ‘rice’ and ‘Rio de Janeiro Myrtle’

    Open Access•Michael Devitt, Ben Porter•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2023•Cited by: 1

Experiments have led some philosophers to conclude that the reference determination of natural kind terms is neither simply descriptive nor simply causal‐historical. Various theories have been aired to account for this, including ambiguity, hybrid, and different‐idiolects theories. Devitt and Porter (2021) hypothesized that some terms are covered by one theory, some another, with a place for all the proposed theories. The present paper tests hypo…

  • The Relation Between Pet Ownership, Anxiety, and Depressive Symptoms in Late Life: Propensity Score Matched Analyses

Courtney J Bolstad, Ben Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 33

The purpose of this study was to explore the differences in anxiety and depressive symptoms between older adult pet owners and non-pet owners after accounting for various correlates. Research findings on the anxiety-relieving and antidepressant effects of late-life pet ownership are mixed and limited. This may be due in part to various characteristics that impact the likelihood of owning a pet. Propensity score matching was used to pair 169 pet o…

  • Meta-Accuracy and Perceived Reciprocity From the Perception-Meta-Perception Social Relations Model

    Ben Porter, Camilla S Øverup et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Meta-accuracy and perceptions of reciprocity can be measured by covariances between latent variables in two social relations models examining perception and meta-perception. We propose a single unified model called the Perception-Meta-Perception Social Relations Model (PM-SRM). This model simultaneously estimates all possible parameters to provide a more complete understanding of the relationships between perception and meta-perception. We descri…

  • Hetmanka and Mother: Representing the Virgin Mary in Modern Poland

    Open Access•Ben Porter, Brian Porter•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2005•Cited by: 11•References: 1

Marian devotion has long been a central component of Catholic spirituality, in part because the image of the Virgin has been accommodated effectively within so many diverse cultural contexts. In modern Poland, Marianism gained much of its power from the way it linked seemingly contradictory models of femininity together within a national (or even nationalist) worldview. Mary, the Queen of Poland, has been offered to the faithful as a model for co…

  • Who Is a Pole and Where Is Poland? Territory and Nation in the Rhetoric of Polish National Democracy before 1905

    Open Access•Ben Porter, Brian A Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•1992•Cited by: 5•References: 9

At the turn of the twentieth century most Polish political activists dreamed of recreating the Polish state, although they disagreed about where the new Poland should be located and whom it should include. In the years before 1905 the National Democratic movement-the "Endecja," as it was commonly called-envisioned an expansive Poland stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea, and from the Dnieper to the Oder. How could a movement which came to …

  • David Davies: A hunter after peace

    Open Access•Ben Porter, Brian Porter•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 1

David Davies, or Lord Davies as he became in 1932, was a remarkable man who achieved some remarkable things. In the academic sphere he is perhaps best remembered for his founding of the Chair and Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth, but establishing a new university discipline was only part of a larger vision and concern: that of securing, no less, the peace of the world. Lord Davies was not alone in this, nor in the inter-war per…
