  • Performing equity, containing change

    Open Access•Joseph James Alvaro•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Education•2026

This article examines how diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) discourse in Canadian universities operates as a mode of symbolic governance rather than a straightforward pathway to structural transformation. Drawing on critical discourse analysis and van Leeuwen’s framework for legitimation, the examination considers a variety of DEI-aligned institutional texts from Canada’s nine top-ranked universities. • Political Discourse and World Englishes

Open Access•K Bolton, Joseph James Alvaro•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2015

Over the last three decades or so, there has been a major paradigm shift in academic and linguistic approaches to the study of English worldwide. From the 1980s onwards, there has been increased recognition that the majority of people speaking English in the world today are to be found in multilingual societies worldwide, a growing consensus that English language is no longer the possession of such “native speaker” countries as Britain, the Unite…

    Open Access•Joseph James Alvaro•ARTICLE•World Englishes•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Using Kachru's Caliban dynamic as a metaphor, I examine how China attempts to send an ideologically loaded, Sinocentric English back to the 'colonisers'. The careful construction of language (linguistic engineering) for political purposes is discussed in its various forms of officialese and fixed formulations as p…

    Open Access•Joseph James Alvaro•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 11

This article is a critical analysis of media discourses in which a dissident social actor is represented in China’s state-run English-language press. Specifically, it looks at media coverage of Liu Xiaobo, author of Charter 2008, a document calling for democracy and human rights in China. He was imprisoned for 11 years by the Chinese government for disseminating Charter 2008, but subsequently (to the government’s chagrin) was awarded the 2010 Nob…

This paper discusses some of the ways in which the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) uses language in its English media. After a historical overview of political 'fixed formulations' (tifa) in China through the ages, we look at specific terms in their contemporary forms as they appear in China's major English language newspaper, theChina Daily. Data taken from a specialized corpus focusing on the term 'harmonious society' is investigated for informat…
