Dynamics of depression symptoms in adolescents during three types of psychotherapy and post‐treatment follow‐up
BACKGROUND: According to the network theory of mental disorders, psychopathology emerges from symptoms that causally influence one another and create interconnections and feedback loops that maintain atypical mental states. Analysis of symptom networks during and following psychotherapy may provide clues to some of the mechanisms through which change occurs. Youth with depression are an important population in which to better understand psychothe…
Brief Psychosocial Intervention for Adolescents
The highest incidence for clinical depressions is during adolescence. Furthermore, mental health illnesses that recur over the life-course begin in young people. 70% of all mental health emerge before thirty years of age. Almost all interventions for young people have been first developed for and targeted at adults. Here for the first time is a talking therapy (BPI), that has been developed for, and with, adolescents. After thirty years of clinic…

Brief Psychosocial Intervention for Adolescents
Toward precision therapeutics
BACKGROUND: The longitudinal course of multiple symptom domains in adolescents treated for major depression is not known. Revealing the temporal course of general and specific psychopathology factors, including potential differences between psychotherapies, may aid therapeutic decision-making. METHODS: Participants were adolescents with major depressive disorder (aged 11-17; 75% female; N = 465) who were part of the IMPACT trial, a randomized con…

Developmental cognitive neuroscience using latent change score models
Assessing and analysing individual differences in change over time is of central scientific importance to developmental neuroscience. However, the literature is based largely on cross-sectional comparisons, which reflect a variety of influences and cannot directly represent change. We advocate using latent change score (LCS) models in longitudinal samples as a statistical framework to tease apart the complex processes underlying lifespan developm…
Diet quality and depressive symptoms in adolescence
Objective Adolescence is a critical period for development of depression and understanding of behavioural risk factors is needed to support appropriate preventive strategies. We examined associations between adolescent diet quality and depressive symptoms, cross-sectionally and prospectively, in a large community cohort, adjusting for behavioural and psychosocial covariates. Design Prospective community-based cohort study (ROOTS). Setting Seconda…
If You Go Down to the Woods Today
Infants’ emotional reactions to an unusual event were assessed at a simulated birthday party during which two costumed characters enacted a Teddy Bear's Picnic. Two hundred and fifty‐eight firstborn infants in a representative British community sample were observed at a mean age of 12.8 months in the presence of their parents and other participating families, in a laboratory sitting room decorated with balloons and banners. The picnic scenario wa…
A call for greater transparency in health policy development
In this paper we describe a systematic attempt to determine whether child and adolescent mental health policy demonstrably draws upon peer-reviewed evidence, and to discover which other sources of evidence could be considered influential in policy development. In brief, we found that the scientific evidence base had been underutilised. However, peer-reviewed research was the most frequently documented source of information in the policies analyse…
The quality of midday meals eaten at school by adolescents; school lunches compared with packed lunches and their contribution to total energy and nutrient intakes
Objective To compare food and nutrient intakes from midday meals provided by schools with those from packed lunches and to estimate the contribution from food eaten at midday to the total daily energy and nutrient intakes of teenagers. Design Dietary data were recorded in 4 d estimated diaries of which 2 d were school days. The school day data were analysed for total and midday energy and nutrient intakes. The latter were compared with the recomm…
Identifying early signs of aggression
Our aim was to develop an age‐appropriate measure of early manifestations of aggression. We constructed a questionnaire about normative developmental milestones into which a set of items measuring infants' use of physical force against people and expressed anger were included. These items comprise the Cardiff Infant Contentiousness Scale (CICS). Evidence for the reliability and validity of the CICS is provided from analyses of a sample of N =310 …
Biased Mentalizing in Children Aged Seven to 11
A new approach to the measurement of mentalizing is introduced. Instead of measuring the presence or absence of mentalizing capacity, the current study aimed at developing a mentalizing task that focuses on investigating biases in mentalizing through the use of ambiguous peer‐related social scenarios. The response consistency of 659 children was investigated in a community sample of children aged seven to 11. Confirmatory latent class analysis al…
Rock against racism
This article discusses the Rock Against Racism (RAR) movement in Britain and scrutinizes a number of critical responses to it. In doing so it attempts to clarify the political and cultural basis of the organization and to explore the ethnic boundaries implicit in RAR ‘s strong emphasis on punk rock and reggae music. Such an account demands that we appreciate both the political ideas that motivated RAR ‘s founders and the social and cultural condi…
