Knowledge About Psychosocial Interventions Among Individuals With Severe Mental Illness: Results of a Cross-Sectional Study
Reform of care for people with mental illness in two German states before reunification: An oral history approach
Between 1960 and 1985 efforts to reform psychiatry took place in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). Although to differing degrees, these efforts showed parallel approaches, for example with regard to negotiations on coercion or the participation of mentally ill people. Oral history interviews conducted with contemporary witnesses from both states suggested changes in the direction of the reform of psyc…

To further evaluate the Versius ® system, prospective trials are needed, comparing it to open and laparoscopic surgery as well as to other robotic systems
Experiences Between Nature Conservation and Archaeology in the Old Water System of Southern Hesse (Hesse, Germany)
The landscape of southern Hesse is characterised by many old watercourses. These are areas worthy of protection for both nature conservation and monument protection. On the one hand, they provide special conditions for flora and fauna related to water bodies; on the other hand, from an archaeological point of view, the old watercourses are traffic routes, habitats, sacrificial sites and archives for the history of the landscape. The protection re…

Masculinity and Help-Seeking Among Men With Depression: A Qualitative Study
Background: Many studies indicate that men are more reluctant to seek help for mental health problems than women. Traditional ideas of masculinity are often seen as a cause of this phenomenon. However, little is known about the diversity of experiences during the processes of help-seeking and service use among men with depression who have already utilized mental health services. This study aims to explore men's experiences and attitudes toward de…

METHODS: At baseline, 301 unemployed participants with mental health problems reported pot…
Efficacy of a peer-led group program for unemployed people with mental health problems: Pilot randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND: People with long-term unemployment and mental health problems often find it difficult to take active steps toward help-seeking and job search and to navigate the complex system of available services. Likewise, job center staff would welcome interventions to improve the reintegration of long-term unemployed individuals with mental health problems into the labor market. AIM: To examine the efficacy of a peer-led group program that suppo…
Migration, Identity, and Threatened Mental Health: Examples from Contemporary Fiction
In 2015, the world saw 244 million international migrants. Migration has been shown to be both a protective and a risk factor for mental health, depending on circumstances. Furthermore, culture has an impact on perceptions and constructions of mental illness and identity, both of which can be challenged through migration. Using a qualitative research approach, we analysed five internationally acclaimed and influential novels and one theatre play …

Improving Cancer Incidence Estimates for American Indians and Alaska Natives in the Pacific Northwest
In many disease registries, including cancer registries, misclassification of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) race is common. This type of misclassification threatens the validity of existing estimates of disease occurrence in this population.1–9 From a public health perspective, the underestimation of cancer incidence has a potentially great effect, as appropriate cancer control measures are less likely to be implemented in light of sp…
Measuring the Health Status Gap for American Indians/Alaska Natives: Getting Closer to the Truth
Objectives. We compared the historical method of calculating cancer incidence rates with 2 new methods to determine which approach optimally estimates the burden of cancer among the Northwest American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) population. Methods. The first method replicates the traditional way of calculating race-specific rates, and the 2 new methods use probabilistic record linkages to ascertain cancer cases. We indirectly adjusted all rates …

Women in Roman forts - lack of knowledge or a social claim
The classic idea of the Roman army, especially of the legions, is that of a man's world, where discipline and military drill dominate, and where there is no room for women, whatever their social status or function. This idea has been fostered by the picture painted by the antique authors, in which fighting by women is reserved to goddesses (Athena/Minerva) and exceptional personages. The normal female is described as a mother or wife, whose chief…

Social networks and service utilisation in patients with severe mental illness
In a seminal study, Elizabeth Bott (1957) investigated relationships between family roles and social networks in a small group of families in London. The author was an anthropologist, and the field of social network research, in psychiatry, has received major input from methods of social anthropology. Tolsdorf (1976) investigated social networks of patients with schizophrenia. Since then, many studies have focused different aspects of social netw…

Social Networks and Mental Health Service Utilisation - a Literature Review
Social networks have been shown to be smaller in individuals with severe mental illness than in the general population. Patients' social networks and social support may impact on their utilisation of psychiatric services. This literature review focuses on social networks, social support and mental health service use in patients with mental illness. Most studies suggest that smaller social networks or less social support are associated with more f…

Autohyponymy: Implicature in Lexical Semantics, Word Formation, and Grammar
The word meanings given in dictionaries normally are “pragmatic meanings,” that is, utterance meanings in prototypical situations. Those glosses are perfectly adequate for the needs of the normal dictionary user but they do not meet scientific standards. As H. P. Grice and L. Horn have shown in various publications, the apparent meanings of many words are in fact combinations of their lexical meanings proper and some superimposed conversational i…
